New Member from Fife

Hi All,

Just a few lines to introduce myself - names Bill and I hail from the Kingdom of Fife. Originally owned a 2.8TD for 3 years from 98 to 01 (Reg N735 ESG). Company car replaced it and my wife got the Fronty but she found it too big to drive so it was traded in for a smaller car - have regretted it many times over as I loved that car.

Would be great to know if the old Fronty's still around - it went to a dealer in Dundee.

I am in the process of looking at a 54 plate 2.2DTI Olympus LWB with 53K on the clock and guess what, 1 lady owner from new.

Now for the crunch, need some advice from the Fronty gurus - had a test drive a few hours ago and thought it was in 2W drive (not familure with the config of setting the 4W/2W drive on this as it's so different to my old 2.

and it was in 4W drive. At about 55mph it jumped out of High gear on the High/4L gear change loosing drive to the wheels. Fortunately, this was close to a layby so pulled in and found the correct setting for 2W drive. Any advice on this would be apreciated.
Second one is the display was reading "Safe" below the temp reading - any ideas on this?

Just like to say Ive been looking around the forum for the last few days and I'm very impressed by the help and knowledge given by the members here. Seems to me that there's a real good following for the Fronties.

Hi and welcome to fog.Safe on the mfd usually means the radio has lost its code.And were you using the 4wd in the snow or on tarmac?

Hi, On the tarmac for a few miles

4x4 is not really to be used on tarmac.The frontera is only a part time 4x4 and should be used on snow,loose ground etc in 4x4.

Hello from what the news says fife has no tarmac just snow and ice

I'm fed up listening to the Fife roads spokesman on the news telling us "it's the contactors fault for not supplying the salt" What a load of bull !

What he should have said was "Sorry, due to the cost cutting Fife Region has been doing we got caught short with next to no salt" Then it would be plausable, especially when major roads have not been salted. Went on the Edinburgh to Perth motorway last saturday only to get 10 miles before the snows started. Came to a standstill after about 10 miles due to cars skidding of the motorway into the LHS banking - motorway was sheet ice and no sign of salting whatsoever. So the side roads in Glasows not much better but hope the motorways are better that this side of the country

You'll get all the help you need here, as its the best around.
As above, dont use 4wd on hard ground as the fronty does not have a free wheeling hub likes of the Landys.
If you do, you will get "wind up" amd bugger the transmission mate.
Hope you decide to buy her and good luck if you do.

I'm from Leslie - just to the north of Glenrothes. Have been passing the Fronty for the last month at a dealer in Kirkcaldy so will be back in daylight tomorrow morning to have a good look around her (assuming it's a she) and check startup as the battery was flat last Saturday when I first went in to view the car. Was up on ramps to show it off in the forecourt so they must have put it in 4W drive to get it up there. Not being familur with the setup, assumed it was in 2W drive but clearly was not - lesson learnt.

Thanks to replies so far, N1ova hit the nail on the head with the "Safe" on the mfd as the battery had been taken out to get it charged up - thanks.

Yes, I would agree with you that FOG's the best around - only found it by chance by doing a google search for Frontera Forums and lo and behold FOG came up. A lot of good tips, help and a real community for Fronty owners. All going well, should have "Haggis" by end of week or early next week.

Like said above...4wd for slippy surfaces only fella, as the fronty has no centre diff like a landy, and when in 4x4 the front end is locked to the rear in the TF box, so no allowance to front to rear wheel speed difference is possible other than a tyre slipping somewhere, which is fine on the slippy stuff, but on grippy stuff something may bust in the drivetrain before a tyre looses grip...

Got down to have a look at the Fronty this morning in daylight and another test drive and all went well so expect to have the beast by saturday
