hey from a newby! scott from barnsley, just sold on my suzuki jimny which i just got tired with going to be buying meself a frontera project to mod after a bit!
didnt get chance to do any laning or off road days in the jimny, and coming from a modified car background rather than 4x4 i think im in need of showing the ropes with regards to green laning etc! so once ive got me self a set of wheels hopefully il be able to meet up with a few locals off here to show me the ropes!

i am looking at a petrol one so are there any prolific weak spots on them that i need to check for?!

yup ....

make sure the Black fuel pump relay ...(located behind the drivers headlight ...Dependant on model year) is in good order .....take it out ..and check the socket thing isn't melted or full of mud/rubbish

does it matter if it has high milage i.e. over 100k or am i better looking for something under 100k miles?

and is it just down to personal preference with regards to the swb or lwb?

sorry for all the questions but want to get all the info together before i take the plunge!

To be honest ...i don't think mileage has much bearing on the overall vehicle ...obviously if you can get a low miler then all well and good ..
my 2.8tdi LWB has over 150k on it

LWB /SWB preference is down to personal choic ....but ...the LWB's are more sure footed both on and off road
with the SWB being a bit "skitty / lively"

suppose then the only real advantage a swb has over a lwb is the turning circle and angle that they are able to get over obstacles at without getting beached on the top!

seen a nice 98 lwb 2.2 transglobe with 88k full service history and reciepts and full leather are they any good?

also quite a few swb 2.0 sports around here on private ad's so may go have a look at them.

the bottom end on the 2.2 petrols seem to be a bit weak and tend to throw the rods out through the block

the 2.0's are very good ..i had one myself ... :lol:

reliabilitys a key factor in buying one so thats why i was looking for the info first!

think as am used to swb cars, last car was a jimny! probably best to go that way for now anyways.

£900 for a 98 sport 2.0 with 90k with some service history sound ok?

900 quid .......it would have to be immaculate with a full history for that :wink:

make sure you go over it with a fine toothed comb ...and test the 4wd system too ...(drive in a dead straight line whilst in 4wd) :wink:

it seems quite clean from what ive seen and a good mechanic friend of mine has had a look at it and said that from what he's seen its in a1 condition, suppose its all down to how it drive and if it brings about any nasty noises when driving.

suppose the main thing to look for is if the autolocking hubs are working, although from what ive read on here its not a big job to sort as long as the circlip and washer are intack.

any thing else i should look for?

the auto hubs are a sinch to service ...

as you say ...listen out for any unusual noises and knocking ....if you can get your mechanic friend to sit in on the test drive

make sure you test all the gears ...have a good pokey about under the lid (bonnet) :wink:

also make sure the pedals don't have any free play
