Fresh Fronty owner

So I picked up my 2.5 TDI LWB Arizona earlier today :dance:

After driving a Calibra for 3 years, the ride was unbelievably comfy. Could hardly feel the usual teeth-rattling road conditions we have here.

Now the ugly part... When I was checking the car out on Saturday, the battery was dead and we had to boost start it with another car. However, this morning, apparently the starter gave away. All I'm getting is a solenoid click when turning the key. Going to have to tackle the problem of removing the starter engine tomorrow. Any pointers?

If your only getting a "click" it could be that the battery has not got enough charge to turn the engine over and the relay is clicking.

Tried piggybacking a second battery and also, all my lights in the dash stay nice and bright when I turn the key.

Just did a search in the forums and found to my horror that it's a lot of work to get the starter mototr out :shock:

So I got my work cut out for me tomorrow. Need to get the car running by saturday. Promised to take the missus on a shopping trip. And she is _not_ sitting her pretty bottom down in the Calibra again apparently :mrgreen:

Hi and welcome to fog.I got a 2.5 recently but sorry but I havent had the pleasure of removing a starter motor yet.
My relay clicks before starting and also a light sometimes flashes on the dash and I have to turn off and restart sometimes four times.The contacts need cleaning under the bonnet which I havent done yet.
There is a register of 2.5 owners and hopefully one will be along soon to help.

well welcome along to the forum and im another that ownsthe 2.5 tds but never took the starter off so i will see how hard it is when you post that you got yours done and good luck with it hope it goes easy for you

Ok, so getting to the starter motor without lifting the car or having a pit is a major PITA :evil:

At least I managed to confirm it's the starter motor, as connecting direct 12v to the solenoid gives no results. Turns out it was the starter relay that was clicking. Will get some WD-40 tomorrow and try to get those prop shaft+exhaust bolts loose.

Not done a 2.5 one b4, but might be worth having some really long extension bars to hand as they can help getting to awkward bolts by going at them past the gearbox...

Hello and welcome, hope you get your truck sorted.

Ok, so today was the day I decided the starter motor is coming off! Now, 9 hours later, the starter motor is still on the truck :axe:

Has anyone removed the starter motor from top instead of the bottom of the car? Would it clear the fuel pipe/AC pipe intersection? I've removed the exhaust along with the elbow on the turbo housing, but now I have the exhaust pipe stuck. I have it lowered past the starter motor but that's as far as it will go with the elbow attached.

Just an update. Managed to get the starter motor off the truck. And yes, you can remove it upwards, it will clear all pipes and hoses nicely. Sent it to be refurbished and expecting it back by friday.
