im looking to get a frontera in the next few weeks looking at the 2.2 dti version ?
any tips of what to look for when looking around them ?

welcome to FOG,
give a search around the 2.2 diesel forum, that should give you a general idea of the possible engine probs that you may find. otherwise it's just a case of the usual basic car buying experience, if you don't trust it or aren't sure after a test drive then walk away and have a think. That said when I got mine, the test drive was ok but once I owned it i kind of hated it...for a week...then i found FOG and now I love it
