I'm going to post this up once I get an verification email from the bbc
any 'usueful' comments about any part appreciated I’m sorry Angela but you say 4x4 drivers want more of the countryside and this is wrong to the point of lying. Off-roaders just want to be able to drive the by-ways and Boats already there, or rather we’re there as increasingly due to the pressure of people like yourselves the old green roads of this country are slowly disappearing. I’m not a 4x4 owner nor do I belong to any groups, but I used to. In my time I often saw the very people you say do no damage doing just that. Stone walls ripped down by ramblers, litter and damage left by cyclists, dog walkers who don’t give a monkeys where their dog runs what it digs up or what animals it chases. I’ve seen ‘walkers’ dogs let lose in SSI areas, god only knows what damage was being done to the plants (did you know dog poo can ruin a SSI area due to the extra nutrients deposited). And as for your comment “do that and then park and walk or cycle’ have you ever you ever noticed that the ends of many lanes suffer damage caused by parked cars of walkers, cyclist and even horse boxes? Tell me have you ever been on a ‘green lane repair day’? Many local 4x4 clubs organised days where they will cutback foliage, repair drainage, remove fly tipping litter etc –no? (you might like to look at the GLASS web site for a local green lane day http://www.glass-uk.org/ and join in). Have you ever known walkers clubs to organise days like this? Have you thought about the many lanes that if not for the 4x4 clubs would soon be overgrown and unusable by many other groups? Local councils would rather close lanes off, which used to be known as ‘stopping up’, rather than repair them, it’s cheaper. Once the 4x4 groups are no longer able to drive these lanes many of the old green roads they will be lost forever to you me and our children. Perhaps we should look at just how many miles of by-ways there are that 4x4’s can legally drive and how many miles of green lanes that are now lost forever, yes forever, due to the small mined actions of others.
