Fording Run

Postby sollihull on Mon Jun 26, 2006 12:25 am

Well, I've been asked a couple of times about the "Run" I do!

So here goes!!

Jump in the Beast in Solihull and off I go!! Kids'n'Mrs in the car hoping they'll not get wet (I only forgot to close the windows once!! Honest I genuinly forgot.)

A quick journey down the A41 until I turn off onto the B4012,
Then a Right onto Ravenshaw Lane and an Immediate Left onto
Berry Hall Lane (This is a good Lane as it Floods frequently) then a
Right onto Henwood Lane and over the Canal and Down to the
Solihull Ford (Irish Ford) sometimes it's dry and other times it's 2ft deep!

Image

Then a Left Turn after going under the M42 onto Barston Lane, All the way along there until you need to Turn Right and then Left over Knowle Lane staying on Barston Lane then along there till you Turn Right onto Hob Lane. Now this is a tricky one as you can't go straight down the Road as a Fronty will ground out so you Turn Right onto Elvers Green Lane and find yourself going over the Barston Ford , This one only really comes into action when the Solihull Ford has about 1.5ft - 2ft of water in it!

Image

Then follow the Road round and come out at Kenilworth Road, hang a left and follow the Road down until you see Fen End Road on the Right (By a School) and Turn down there! Keep going until you come across a Left Turn Fernhill Lane, Straight over the Crossroads and you find One of the Sedgemere Fords (They both need a lot of rainfall to come into action but still provide a minor splash the rest of the time, But it's a nice drive)

Image

Then turn around go all the way back to the Crossroads and Turn Right onto Long Brook Lane where you'll come across the other Sedgemere Ford

Image

Then follow the Road down until you emerge onto Balsall Street again.

Here's the option of a quick Coke at a Pub Turn Right or Turn Left and head back up the Road until you see the Mud Lane Entrance of a UCR ! then 10 meters away from that is the Temple Balsall Ford , this nearly always has a minimum of 1ft of water in it and is my Personal Favourite

Image

Regretfully it's one at a time and turn around and drive back through from the other side as the Green Lane/UCR on the other side is in a bad state! (Apparently some GLASS Members did a Repair Day on the UCR but it's been ripped to pieces by tractors) !!

Then Back onto Kenilworth Road for a Drive over to Henly-in-Arden, so it's back up to Knowle and across then down Station Road all the way down there until you hit the A3400 and Turn Left. Follow that all the way down and Through Henly-in-Arden then a Left Turn onto Warwick Road then a Left Turn onto Rookery Lane.

You're then looking for a Dead End Road called Preston Fields Lane...
This IS a Dead End for most vehicles as it becomes a Green Lane.
Head down the Lane and you go through Preston Fields Ford

Image

Then drive out past the Farm and you're onto Henly Road.
Now you have a Choice, Turn Left and head back towards Henly or Turn Right and Head into Single Track Roads where it's easy to get turned around!!!

Back to Henly-in-Arden and along the A4189 then a Left onto the A435
and Hang a Left at Coughton Court down the Coach Access Road! Follow the Road along until you arrive at Coughton Ford (ALWAYS good for a Splash-Through with a decent Bridge for Pics/Vid!)

Image

Then follow the Road all the way down the twists and turns until you reach the end at the B4089 then Turn Left and go all the way through Alne until you see the tiny Mill Lane on the Right! (You can tell by the Warning Signs for Ford and Weight Limit on the Bridge!) then Bounce your way down the Road until you get to the Bottom and find yourself at the Great Alne Ford

Image
that's not me before you say anything
Image

You emerge from the other side of the Ford into a Large Area that could take Several Vehicles at once and I guess that'd be the end of the trip!!!

So I drive back to Solihull with 2 Snoring toddlers, Bored 13yr Old and a sore Wife! So just to make them happy I burn up the Stratford Road through Hall Green, Turn Left onto Cole Bank Road Right onto Sarehole Road and then Left onto Green Road and straight through the Hall Green Ford

Image

And then off home!!

That's my usual Ford-Run!!

It's more fun driving it than it was typing it

Excellent Steve.

I followed most of that tour in the A-Z, Memory Map and Multi-Map, but it is difficult following street names.

I found you comments on the UCRs and green lanes interesting, and two I have quickly researched are legal - maybe they could be incorporated into your route (get the car dirty, then ford it clean :D )

How long does the route take, and what sort of mileage is it.

I know it's difficult following Street names Lawrence, but I only had Multi-Map available to me this morning! It took me 1 1/2 Hrs to type it all up, find the images and get names as I usually drive it from Memory. Sorry!

If it's been raining then Berry Hall Lane is more than enough to Muddy the Roof! and worry a few of the Nerves if you take it at 20 with everything splashing over the car! The Lane has Steep Sides that force the water back and over you.

The Temple Balsall UCR is only for those who don't mind losing some panels! I ground after 7 meters so I don't attempt it!

The Preston Fields Ford Green Lane is one I asked you about before I made my First Visit there!
Also the GL is not quite 1/2 a mile long! so maybe we can reduce the Time-Gap between Groups so the others aren't waiting for too long at the other side? Especially as One End is at the End of a Residential Road and the other's Right on a nasty Corner!!

The Great Alne Ford road is almost as good as a Green Lane as the Tarmac's Broken and it's very rutted and you come out the other side onto a Farm Track!!

you can generally look at around 1 1/2 to 2 Hours depending on Nappy Changes and the Mrs not getting her Cam ready! lol

Mileage, I'm not sure but I'd say about 30 but don't quote me on it!!
I'm looking at maybe giving it a go later today or tomorrow so I'll get definate Times and Mileage

Nice one Steve - you ought to give me the nod next time you do the run if you fancy some Fronty company! I have done the Kings Coughton one quite a bit, but didn;t realise there was another one down the end of that road :(

I'll start a new thread but my mind's gona blank as to Large Car Parks in the Area that'll accomodate 3 + Fronties (If Andy wants to do the whole run! ANSWER YOUR PM ANDY!! lol )

Ye Olde Saracens Head
Balsall St, Balsall Common, Coventry, West Midlands CV7 7AS
http://www.yell.com/search/ShowMap?nat_ ... bleSeed%3D

This is actually the only Major Pub with a Decent Sized Car Park I could think of! And looking at it it's Ideally Situated as it's less than 1/2 a Mile to the Sedgewick Fords! But in Meeting there we miss out Berry Hall Lane, Solihull and Barston Fords!! I might be able to look at the route and plan the Return to the Pub via the Back of Solihull and swing down those on the way back! Barston's usually Dry but Berry Hall Lane and Solihull Ford I can check on the way over!

What do you think Lawrence?

OK, Under Advisement I ran a brief Recce on the route today!
BUT I forgot to time it!!!

I cleared a Bin-Bag Full of rubbish from the Green Lane at Preston Fields and notified the Council about a Dumped Battery at Temple Balsall
Also Cleared some huge chunks of Rock off the Long Brook Lane Section!

most of the Fords are Running Low at the Moment but I'll check the Deepest 2 on the Day before we meet up!

It wasn't that muddy either

Hmm, I was going to post a pic of the Big Blue Bus in all it's shiney glory, including the clean(ish) engine bay, but I just remembered I'm going away camping this weekend and I'm bound to find a lane or two that will need exploring - it would be rude not to - so I guess the term Big Brown Bus would be more appropriate.
