Beginners Green Lane Trip – Saturday 25th October 2008

Regarding auto/manual hubs and 2/4 wheel drive this weekend...

This is what I'll be doing:

Just before we leave the meeting point car park, I'll "lock" my front manual hubs.
I'll be driving along the tarmac roads in 2-High
On entering a lane (off tarmac) I'll engage 4-Low
On leaving a lane and returning to tarmac, I'll shift to 2-high
When we finish the final lane, I'll be unlocking the front hubs

(A series auto hub users don't need to manually lock/unlock the hubs)
(B series owners just need to press/unpress a button on the dash)

I do this because:
Driving in 4-Low on an unsurfaced mountain track is more relaxing for both the driver and the vehicle.
It allows you to use two or three gears rather than struggling in one (1st)
It is easier to control the vehicles speed
Should you come to a place (obstacle) that needs 4x4L, you are already in the correct gear/range to tackle it (without having to lose forward motion)

I've driven this route with both a 2.8TDi and a 2.0I and 4x4-Low works well for both. Fuel consumption at the speeds we will be travelling will be minimal.

Other members have driven this route (or the most part of it) in 2-high - I just prefer the pace and security of 4-Low when off tarmac.

yep my first time on the wayfairer was done in 4 low as lawrence says it gives a good safe feel

Likewise I prefer 4Lo for control purposes. 2nd gear pretty much all day long.

Im must be strange I do most of it in 1 or 3 hi.... I live on the edge you see :twisted:

I just find it keeps revs lower, then when I get to a really steep bit up or down or a step I do the little on the move flick to lo box

Nah, I find 1H is too tall for laning, not enough torque at low speeds without dipping the clutch and getting the revs up otherwise it feels like Im gonna stall all the time. Different diffs, different engines and possibly the gearboxes are different ratios as well.

Yer I couldnt get away with it in the sport, I would be doing 20 miles and hour :lol:

Go on it will show what a minor stuck can look like,yes people at this time it was IN 4wd.

Thats mad......i have a question though......doesnt all 4 wheels drive when in 4wd or just in low box :?:

All 4 are driven high or low,I reversed to far up the bank & was rocking on the tow bar.

Without LSD as soon as 1 wheel leaves the ground all drive is lost to that axle,what you cannot see is the front on the opposite corner is also only kissing the ground.

Mmmmmmmm.......how much is an LSD then Bernie?????
