11/12/11 - Avalanche Adventure(Sibbertoft)

Hi all,

I'm going to the above pay/play day this Sunday (11/12/11)

My petrol B-series LWB 2.2 Limited is completely standard, but should be an interesting day with lots of learning. Anyone else going to be there from the Fronty crew? Anyone been before with an insight as to how well our trucks cope?

Would be interesting to see how the site has changed since they had their digger day if you can get any photos :wink:

We as a group were there last April for the annual meet. Personally I didn't venture on to the course as I've been there a fews times before and suffered the consequences. However a good nuber of peeps did have a crack, some coming to grief.

Since our visit the site has had a "digger day" therefore the site will be well re-arranged, having said that a good part of the site is of fairly well fixed substrate so I expect the pofile will remain much the same.

As for your standard LWB presummably on road tyres, will be hard pressed to get around alot of the course if it's wet. Stay out of the woods and the lake, for the woods you'll need aggresive tyres and for the lake you should have a snorkel (unless you know where to drive the shallower parts.

Don't be put off by the above, even if you don't drive the course you'll still have a good day spectating, take a camera for capturing the misdemeaners and post them up on the forum. It'll be good to see the site on you photos as we are going there for the 2012 Annual meet.

If you do get stuck ask a fellow 4x4 enthusiat on the course if they will pull you out.......

Dont be last one to leave site as if you get stuck the owners will charge for pulling you off site.

With the rain we've had today the going will be sticky and there won't be any shallow parts!!!!!!!!!

Just a little heads up - as with alot of old quarry pay and play sites, the water contains alot of sandy/grit which is very damaging. I got away lightly because all I had was leaking rear brake piston. After I had dismantled and cleared all the grit out that had found it's way past the rubber seals it sorted the problem. One of our members was not so lucky, he drove a perfectly good motor up there and unfortunately, sustained alot of engine damage which I reckon was a result of getting stuck in the water. The only part of water I drove through was the shallow part of the lake a few times. Fair play, with the low water level at the time, the grit content might have been more concentrated, hence more damaging. All I would say is that if you are going wading, strope up front and back to assist a tow out and be prepared to kill your engine quickly if you get stuck in. As with alot of pay and play sites, check your radiator fins before you drive home and try to hose it out if there is alot of grud in there. Might save you unforeseen overheating problems on the way home, which has been known to turn into a blown headgasket.
Other than that, enjoy yourself and have fun.

Great replies, and has given me some thoughts! I had a minor panic yesterday, and told my friends we may need to reconsider, however pier pressure was applied!

I'm going to go, be sensible at what I tackle, and hopefully (lots of hope!) have good pictures and a working car afterwards!

Hi all,

Well just to confirm - I'm now back, with a fully intact and working fronty. I was quite impressed, the site itself was good, with lots of friendly peeps about.

The mud was very slushy - and LOTS of it. I was actually quite surprised at how well the standard tyres managed to cope, but I did spend the entire day in low range. Only issues I came across at the end of the day was the clay-type mud had formed on my radiator, sending temps up quickly, but I managed this carefully and we found a jet was to clean up the front. Once this was sorted it was fine.

Only casualty today where that both number plates ended up in the mud, but found them...and I've slightly broken the running board/side step - but I will be removing these anyway as they were restricting clearance.

Did you find that little play area the other side of the main entrance road? You would have known if you had because there were a couple of gates that needed opening as you crossed the entrance road.

Yes box it does Look very much the same as when we were there for the annual

Ruts have been removed, looks much flatter now

Haven't viewed the photos yet, but if the ruts have all gone it makes ther tops of the hills interesting when all you can see is sky and nothing to guide the wheels. Thats how it use to be when I first went there many years ago, scary when you get it wrong and start to slide off the side!!!!!!! not me personally, some baffoon in a Lara Croft Tomb Raider 110 (all the gear and no idear).

Roll the Annual.

This was the site where the owners were right at the sharp end. Remember seeing a post of here whereby they invited the Caterpillar club in to have a play - smart move :clap:
