Time for a change of vehicle

I have finally given up trying to keep on top of the maintenance and repair of my Discovery TD5. I do love driving it and with the VVT/Remap/ big intercooler it does really fly but the cost of fixing things on it along with the time that's been invested I have had enough.

So next question is what to get instead? Bear in mind this is not an off road motor but a large, roomy, comfortable family vehicle that can tow over 3000kgs I need something that can do the same, be more reliable and turn in at least 30mpg (yes the D2 does average about that)

Oh, and SWMBO must like it

Trooper/Bighorn 3.1 manual .. or the 3.2 on LPG?

Both have the tow capacity. There isn't much other than the LR range and Isuzu that has 3000+Kg towing capacity.

Depending on budget, I would go 80 series TLC as tow car...awesome beasts, miss mine...

I'd say my jeep wh has served me wonderfully but mpg figures like 30 are only attainable down hill with the engine off lol. Mine gets on the daily commute 19 ish, mid 20's on the motorway behaving (60) and around 12-15 between the lights when the throttle changes from a potentiometer to a on/off switch

RatCav: Bit old really, wifey is a number plate snob but also balanced against my budget so looking at 05 models but yes I do fancy a 3.2 but must be on LPG

Gregster: Hadn't thought of Nissan and did briefly look at Toyota offerings but she thinks they are ugly :roll:

Hipo: Yes Jeep is on there but with mpg figures like that it has put me off slightly but the performance figures are really atractive

Current favorite is the Pathfinder, it can tow 3000kg's, performance is OK and bok figures for economy are pretty good for a 4x4. I did look at one locally yesterday just to see if I liked them and give it a good blast to see how they perform and was quite impressed but it was not in great condition, scabs on the sills & tailgate plus loads of knocks and scrapes, brake pedal sank to the floor and he assured me that was how it was supposed to be and reckoned it passed MOT like that plus on acceleration something was rattling in the engine dept so won't be going back to see that one.

Or for something completely different, been offered a deal on a Mondeo diesel ST for my D2. It belongs to a mate and I know its history, really clean and exceptionally well looked after, its been remapped, DPF delete, EGR blanked, goes like a scaled cat and still turns in over 45mpg but this doesn't resolve my towing dilema. However I do still have the G Wagon parked in my sisters garage so could drag that out, sort out the bodywork and give it an MOT for towing duties etc

She thinks landcruisers are ugly???? New woman time, or a trip to specsavers for her....but the second option could be risky for you bud if her eyesight is that bad...she might see you aint just like Leonardo Dicaprio after all...

but yes the performance side of things does well and truly makes up for (and explains) the rubbish mpg figures. And with the quatra drive II diffs it's dam near unstoppable with the right tyres on. My mates e46 320i couldn't get away from me and that was with the bigger tyres on (265/70 17) and if I had launched it properly then he'd had been dust as I had to wait for the torque converter to do its thing before I moved so he got that head start on me. And can tow 3500kgs.

I been looking at the Jeep Grand Cherokee they are so nice to drive. I love driving Chrissy's Jeep Cherokee 2.5crd.

Don't ever get a petrol Jeep on LPG. The ECU melts down quicker than a 2.2i petrol Frontera (voice of experience)

Shogun box might be easier to fit to a fronty than a landy one...and they had a centre diff also...

Front diff output is on the wrong side, same goes for the old Cherokee XJ
