Get you home breakdown insurance for 4x4 recommendations

Postby Retro Pedro on Sun Nov 23, 2014 9:30 am

As title, anybody got any reasonable cost recommendations for this cover?
I insure with Frank Pickles who used to sale an RAC breakdown insurance for £60/annum and no problems with a muddied up 4x4. Frank Pickles don't/didn't offer this service anymore.
I've been running with AA person cover rather than specific car cover and the last time I got the truck home on flat bed the driver told me they would refuse to load a muddied up 4x4 that had obviously just been off-roading. I know there's ways around this by hopefully getting towed to a car wash prior to calling the recovery service but if that wasn't an option I'm thinking a no dramas recovery policy will be a better bet.

I've got RAC cover for myself, Pete.
Have only had to use it twice, once in my mother's car and once in the woods when the BBB popped a brake hose.

Barring the cockup where they sent a van to the woods initially, things were alright, and I got a flatbed to take me home. No issues with the state of the car, which was a bit muddy at the time, but drove itself into the flatbed.
I suspect whether or not a muddy 4x4 is acceptable comes down to the flatbed driver, as a lot of the time you'll be handled by a subcontractor and it's their call.

I am due to renew my AA subscription in January.. though I do wonder about the so called renewal charges..

I can get the same cover as a new customer on their website as I have now for over £100 cheaper than the renewal price they have given me.

Think I will be arguing this one..!

Cheers Jim
Don't the AA do your head in. They seem to have an habit of painting a rosie picture then plying with add ons. Before you know it your paying mega bucks and there's still room for them to be putting more on the table to entice more from your wallet. Of course, it's down to the individual to spot their game and play them at it. The automatic renewal is the ace they like to play on you. My membership started with a hopeful home start when in hindsight, I stupidly unplugged a multiplug on a 07 motor. £11 a month for family cover very soon became £21 a month and that wasn't with relay, only get you to the nearest repairing garage, which isn't the idea when there's a chest full of tools sitting at home. Got on their case last year and the 'loyalty' discount soon became £13 a month. Then without keeping my eye on the ball, contract renewal came along, without any correspondence from the AA. Straight into a new contract with the automatic renewal kicking in, and the premiums are suddendly back at the £21. Back on the phone and the magical 'loyalty' discount is an option again. On the table is family cover, just me and the wife, covering any car that we happen to be driving (not sure if cars have to be registered to us or it applies to any motor that we happen to be driving at the time of breakdown). Dropping the home start, I can now get full relay, road side assistance as long as it's a quarter of a mile away from our house, for an attractive £12 a month.
With 3 motors in the household, and one of them with 160k on the clock, doing a 60 mile daily round trip, this seems to be the best option. Just need to check out the small print to be 100% sure that I can argue the toss regarding a muddy Frontera on the back of a flat bed. Cheapest I've seen for an individual policy for each car is £68. Fair play that does include home start along side full UK relay.

Adrian flux's own break down addon has never let me down. Plus they've always been really quick (fastest was about 45mins between breaking down and being all loaded up)
