What a day .... Letter lands on the mat for my wife today from HMRC ,£100 for not sending a tax return in .gets on the phone to sort it out to be told "no mrs it's not a £100 fine it's £1300 because you never sent last years in "
Today is the first letter we have had from them other than national insurance payments dues ..... There record say they have sent several letters and sent the relivent return forms for her to do .... I wouldn't mind if it was our fault and we had been lazy but hand on heart this Is the 1st we have had ......... Not a happy boy

good luck!

I had similar experience last year, didn't go well BUT this was down to my circumstances of receiving Share Dividends - apparently(!) I should have known that i needed to complete a return because of "additional income".

Advice given that if I only received a normal PAYE income, no additional/other income and total less than 100k per year then no need to complete a Tax Return unless notice received from HRMC to do so. In this circumstance only, is it acceptable defence that you didn't get the dreaded letter.

Please note that this advice was given by an Accountant not Legal, so take as my experience only...

Hope it goes well for you
