Think i would rather buy another fronty, fuel consumption is just as good but come bad weather such as snow you can still get around. A rear wheel drive vehicle in poor weather is not good. Personally i would look at somethink front wheel drive and diesel.

Agree with ady, consumption on them are going to be equal or less then what you would get out of a Frontera. Try something like this http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=pIts Diesel so good on fuel, reasonable spec, cheep parts if worst comes to worst and goes like pooh off a stick. No brainier if you ask me and is defiantly what I'd be looking at if I was in the market for a new car with that budget.

Dear Mr Fudge, Please find below a link to a motor vehicle I personally see suitable for your needs. http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... ?logcode=pIts a Mercedes as requested, Its a C class that you are already acquainted with. It will eat miles in mass comfort. It looks plush and more then happy turning up at your local golf club. But along with your requests it also is very reliable due to being diesel. Easy to work on ( I have already consulted with my own personal Mercedes Benz Qualified Tech ) And will also save you money on fuel which in turn can be spent on extra mods for the Frontera. I do hope this vehicle forfills your needs Yours Gratefully Matt

For mileage diesel is by far better, a diesel is not properly run in till nearly 100k and serviced regularly will see 300k with ease. Diesel is better for long journeys too as they don't run as hot as petrol so better for the engine. In my eyes any petrol with 150k + on the clock is not going to be over reliable.
After having my diesel skoda a few years ago I will never go back to petrol.
Don't know what others think but an old jaguar as an example I wouldn't say is being or looking posh, likewise anything to expensive screams out look at me I cant afford it its a company car or im upto my eye balls in debt.
Do you mean you want something that doesn't look poor or average but not snobbish. If so look it Volvos, saabs, mercs and bmws as you are. You will probably find them more reliable, better value for money and newer.
Also as a side note do older jags not suffer from gearbox problems?

Hows about an Ex Plod Volvo 850 R Estate (bit like the normal 850 R, but the suspensions been 'tweaked'), loadsa space in the back for the shopping, kids n pet mutt. Plus they go like fek... 0 to 60 in around 6 seconds...
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ) Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... If I was to buy a 'normal' car and had the dosh it would have to be a e46 330d sport. Largely regarded as the M3d (derv M3 ) goes like a bullet, drives like a wet dream and looks smart without being showy offy. And being a large 6 barrel diesel sounds like a beast. Only downer is they have a price tag of around 3k. But at 40 plus mpg you'll soon make up the extra 1.5k that you'd have spent on fuel for the jag. Something like this: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... -mobi-link
My 2.8 shorty - now sold, and comments hereMy old dti - now sold "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "WOW --- What a Ride!" This vehicle runs on 100% recycled dinosaurs

Hi, as I am with Alfa Romeo as a daily driver for a year now this one would fit most of your interests rare, nice look, front wheel drive, diesel, good to drive on longer trips, and - you are used to this as a frontera driver - car demands some enthusiasm to care about some things the garage is not able to explain or repair...
Kind regards, Ian Sorry for my pigeonenglish. My doctor says I have to invest time in SPORT
