Re: advice plsWhat viscosity oil have you used?
Also I think these are hydraulic valves so some hydraulic valve additive to the oil may help. These dont suffer in the way the Frontera Ecotec 2.2 petrol does so most major issues are hopefully avoided. Ste

Re: advice plsYes the 1.6 16v has hydraulic valves. on my 1999 astray 1.6 16v (same engine as your veki) it started tapping after the oil light flickered as I went over a speed bump. My local garage said hydraulic tappets do that when they are worn or starved of oil, some times just topping up the oil stops it and some times nothing will....try some hydraulic valve additive as drifty said and keep half a eye on your fuel consumption...my astray driven normally averaged...wait for it....11mpg. Needless to say I sold it shortly after to someone that didnt speak much english lol

Re: advice plsTake out your plugs ang check them, pay attention to number 4 plug in particular as this engine tends to leak oil into number 4 pot which isnt good! if 4 plug has oil remnents on it, could be start of head gasket

Re: advice plsthanks all it is that tapping sound like the tappits tapping thats why i did the full oil change but ive been looking up bit and some ppl say that the inlet manifold can make the tapping sound and also the egr valve can cause tapping but would the make the engin smoke on start up
Re: advice plsThe head gasket would!! If its letting oil drip into number 4 cylinder then it will get burnt off giving you the smoke....

Re: advice plsFor the tapping noise check the manifold to head studs - prone to breaking leading to manifold gasket blow-by, sounds just like a tappet noise.

Re: advice plsGo to Halfords and grab some of this stuff in:
![]() Wynn's Hydraulic lifter cleaner. I am no fan at all with any snake oil product, but I will highly recommend this stuff. You shove it in the oil and drive around. Takes a few days to fully work. If the hydraulic tappets are siezed (usually due to lack of servicing and maintenance or running low on oil) then it gets in there and flushes the crud out and the noise goes away. They recommend changing the oil once done, but I just leave it in there. I would drop the existing oil. Put this in with a fresh load, and then leave it for a couple of weeks driving the car regularly. The more you drive it the more it does its thing. Once its done its thing then do a proper oil and oil filter change. Obviously it does nothing if they are truely knackered or you have other issues, but that would be my first cheap easy port of call. The smoke could be anything.
