For the best part of this year I've done doing the last couple of years 'to do list' jobs. Although engine is running, car isn't. Steering bottom linkage arm etc and front diff swap still to do. So in the meantime, routinely start the engine every couple of days. Tonight I started it up and initial thoughts are that it sounds alot quieter and smoother. Along with a passing neighbour, even the wife commented how quiet it sounds Jobs recently done are: Adjust tappets Renew glow plugs Blank of EGR valves Replace turbo Put 225ml of 2 stroke engine oil into the 3/4 tank of diesel. Reckon it's tappets that have made the difference because all 8 needed adjusting. What's also nice is that when I switch off, the turbo is instantly quiet - gone is the whistling down noise. Lastly, I've noticed the glow plug light goes off pretty instantly whereas with the old plugs it seemed to stay on alot longer. Appreciate, it is summer, but the old plugs were pretty coated in carbon crud so is that a sign that a long glow plug light indicated that they could need changing.

Moved here as its not a fault wanting an answer in the techi area I found the 2 stroke at 500ml per full tank made a huge difference after a tank or two on the 2.8, I have been running it for months now. The tappets are another major contributor though my turbo has been whistling for near 7 years so not too concerned in that respect. The EGR blanking will make a difference too if they are not already stuck as they click a bit at different rev ranges. Yup your correct the light will stay on longer if the plugs are worn out

My curiosity's been peaked here. What purpose does the 2 stroke in diesel serve? Any particular type/grade of 2 stroke? How much to a tank full? Does it not cause the engine to smoke more?

I use 500ml of 2 stroke MINERAL only  to a tank, mineral 2 stroke is not marked on the bottle in big writing but synthetic is marked and noticeable. I just get mine from Tesco or Asda. The 2.8 is a rather old design of engine and the pump is lubricated by the sulphur in the fuel, now a few years ago the sulphur has been removed from the fuel and other lubricants used, while the other lubricants do the job the 2 stroke adds the sulphur and the pump seems happier and quieter with it added. No noticeable smoke, just the normal puff on a cold start in the cooler weather.

I know alot of people that use old engine oil, and given that around every 3k the oil is changed it would save a fortune and doing your bit for the environment by recycling. Not sure if it would do a similar kind of thing.

Engine oil burns at a higher temperature than diesel, that is when burnt in the combustion chamber it generates a higher temperature. On the downside this can result in the piston crowns burning at the edges down to and beyond th rings, it can also crack pistons acros the crown. Both being catastrophic failures. Usually though on the 2.8 you would see the issue arising because the ends of the glowplugs melt off first. Can't vouch for the 2 stroke oil though, suppose it runs in me chainsaw OK so shouldn't hurt the 2.8 too much when used in the small amounts that Drifty quotes. Just me rambling again, sorry......not sorry really, I,m old so entitled to ramble Regards Stuart
