peugeot 206 noise - advice needed for my girlfriend....

Hi,

girlfriend has a 206 and when you engine brake in it there is a whirring and grinding noise. Its fine accelerating and driving in gear just only whilst engine braking. As soon as you dip the clutch and coast the noise stops. Any ideas on the problem.....

Any advice would be much appreciated.

No idea but possibly a issue with the gearbox as when the clutch is pressed the gearbox is in effect disengaged there for you just coast withought the engine slowing the gearbox down. May the way the diff has worn

Certainly sounds like a gearbox problem to me too. Trouble is the 206 is a front wheel drive "supermini", so it's probably going to be an "everything out" job to get at the gearbox/diff.

you could try changing the gearbox oil, it helped our 206 no end. didn't compleatly silence it mind but did make it sound less dramatic..can't remember what grade oil , we got the oil from shittyron, but can definatly remember it took just under 2ltrs. we got the oil from the stealer because the wife was told they are a little bit fussy about their g'box oil..oh we got it from the other frenchie "car" maker as they are the same units as the saxo.

I had same problem wih my 306, try use a slick 50 addiive it made mine sound better, or turn the sterio up

its the diff in the box if you change the oil it will help they all go like this check you have not got a leak from the box as well cause it could be oil level low they hold 1.8l of oil but should have a level plug on the side of the box from the wheel arch 19mm bolt
