as a yorkshireman myself i really feel for the familys that have lost

I agree it is an un-winnable war but would not using nuclear weapons just put the west in the same category as Saddam Hussain and Saloth Sar (Pol Pot) or even the US in WW11?
Innocent people for generations affected and especially with new emerging nuclear states not being as stable as the old nuclear states have been.

What is needed is sustainable well thought out retreat that gives the normal citizens of the country at least a small chance of democratic liberation, otherwise these lives truly have been wasted in vain.

I'd like to know how you drop a nuclear bomb and only kill the taliban and not millions of other innocent people.

I personally know or that should be, have known 3 lads that have died out there for no reason, they shouldnt be there! this isnt our war and we shouldnt be sending lads out like lambs to the slaughter! The guys out in these dust ridden rat holes do an amazing job, but its a job they shouldnt be made to do! i understand that they signed up knowing what could be but that doesnt make it any easier for their familys or friends to cope with. And i dont see any humanity while these arseholes are killing people just for the hell of it because some sad act mental case sat in a cave has decided they have some right to do it. i need a :drink:

No one questioned any of that Danny. It was the 'Nuke 'em all' comments I was referring too.

it would just eradicate the problem, and probably make way for the next set of idiots to start another war... we should pull out of europe and go back to being our own country, protecting ourselves n not getting drawn into made up conflicts that dont concern us.. People that dont understand should take a trip down to the graveyard in the village i grew up in and have a good look at the graves in there, oh n dont miss my brothers, its the heart shaped one.

Losing any family member under any circumstances is tragic and you have my sincere sympathy. However even that isn't just cause to wipe out a whole race of people!!

There was a little German fella with a tash that had the same idea.

As some of you may know my son is in 3 Yorks and a Warrior driver so you can imagine how my day went.

My sympathies go out to all the families and friends.
I couldn't help feeling guilty when I heard the news I was so relieved my son was not among the dead.

He has phoned me tonight and filled me in on the details one of the lads was his neighbour at camp and another has left an expectant wife, three of the dead were very close friends and he told me how hopeless he felt as the vehicle burned for 7 hours and couldn't be approached as rounds from the chain gun and 30mm cannon were exploding all around the first guys on the scene tried to jemmy the rear door open but with a hydraulic closing force of 4 tons it was a fruitless task.

The whole battalion is stunned as they have only been in theatre 3 weeks and to suffer the biggest loss of life in years is so tragic.

my reference to nuke i know was rash but for my personal view
if the russians couldnt beat them im sure has hell we are in for
alot longer than this pull out by the end of 2014.

we should pull out alot sooner and leave them too it who gives

Even tho theyre happy to do the same to our race!? Im sure a few peoples opinions would change if it was thier little boy or girl comin home in a box. So just to help people understand abit, when you tuck your sons or daughters up in bed, even your wife or husband, just imagine puting them in a hole ground or through that curtain into the oven and imagine the next time you go to tuck them in they arnt there! I have the right, as does everyone on here, to thier own opinion and they shouldnt be questioned for having one! Im so glad your boy is safe and sound mate and im sure hes doing a brilliant job out there, i wish him all the best n hope he stays safe.

Based on that Danny we would:

Nuke Ireland (For all those English, Welsh, Scotish soldiers who were killed by paramilitary groups)
Nuke Argentina (for all those BRits that dies in the Falklands conflict)

And if you go back far enough in history every country we have had conflict with would be wiped out. Where would it end ?

If nuclear weapons could pinpoint the enemy and not innocent civilians and Europeans that are out there I would agree. Unfortunatly nuclear bombs don't distinguish, they just wipe everyone and everything out. Not to mention the lasting effects of fallout.

Sorry guys, but this is clearly an emotive subject which will invoke strong feelings, but this thread was intended I believe to just express members condolences for those who lost their lives, so please can we stay on topic and not digress as such discussions have more appropriate platforms on the web.

A bad day for the Yorks, the Lanks and the forces in general. It was unusually quiet today at work when the news broke, some quiet reflection by folks and more than the odd glance across the airfield and the approach path where we had in the past seen far to many C17's bringing the lads (and lassies) home.

I agree with Greg on this one and to some extent with Danny as well although I would not be dropping the instant sun shine on the 'Ghan. I can think of two countries in the area far more deservent of that little surprise package! And thats all I'm saying on the subject in this thread, this is not the place and there has been too much thread creep already.

RiP lads, see you next week when you pass through, I'll be there.

For our family members who chose to pick up arms and defend our country and way of life, it's a job I know I couldn't do and I am a very proud father who's son choose the armed forces as a career.
I am waiting to hear the repatriation date as our son has asked myself and wife to attend as a mark of respect and say farewell to his friends.
