Anyone know about pyrotecnic courses?

Hi peeps do we have anyone in our ranks that know about pyrotecnic courses for theater?.As im wanting to do a couple to do wirh Ria's projects at school and also with the reenaxcting group that im in, any help geatly appreciated

Are we looking for 'deliberate' (requires calculations & use's less Bang) or do you just want to put the resultant bits across the landscape (no calcs, lots of Bang).

Courtesy of HM RN got a @"***in' big fright one afternoon. Ordnance had washed upon a remote beach and HM RN came to deal with it. "There it is!" I said proudly pointing to the black object a bit longer than a milk bottle. One of the RN guys became the firer whileI left the immediate area with the other two. The "firer" had established a rock outcrop he would hide behind and fire the bomb assisted by a big blob of explosive. Along with the other two, I was walking along the beach away from the area just chatting with them. We were a good 400 metres away and over a hillock and into the next beach area when "BANG" the nasty was detonated. Moments later I heard a"zzzziiiiiiing" and a chunk of whatever crashed into the beach about 10 feet in front of us - piggin' shrapnel! "Nobby (the firer) forgot he was firing on the beach, should of allowed for that" the two casually said.

The Pyro's for the concerts etc are normally brought in as part of the show / stage builders / organisers, but ive checked with our H&S / Fire officers (cheeky fag outside) and they said to lookup ABTT (Association of British Theatre Technicians), its a 'recognised' qualification (more of a :butt:

covering exercise really), and for a school play / renenactment would 'suffice', the courses are around the £150-200 mark.

"The Pyrotechnic Articles (Safety) Regulations 2010
The Pyrotechnic Articles (Safety) Regulations 2010 have just been published. This piece of legislation is the UK implementation of the EU's Pyrotechnic Directive of 2007. As of 4th July 2010 there are new rules concerning the 'supply' of category 1,2 and 3 fireworks which are the classes of 'consumer' fireworks. The new arrangements for professional use material, that is category 4 fireworks and stage pyrotechnics, come into force on 4th July 2013.

On that date stage pyrotechnic devices will be divided into two categories; T1 and T2. T1 are what might loosely be called 'consumer' devices, with T2 representing products for professional use. The dividing line between T1 and T2 has yet to be finalised but is being actively worked on by industry repesentitives from across the EU. As part of this new classification process, stage pyro devices will for the first time be subject to EU standards defining such things as device performance and labelling.

A guide has been produced jointly by the Group of the Confederation of British Industry Explosives Industry (CBI/EIG) and the Local Authority Co-ordinators of Regulatory Services (LACoRS) with involvement from the British Pyrotechnists Association (BPA) and the Association of Stage Pyrotechnicians (ASP) to provide guidance on certain aspects of the new Regulations. It can be downloaded from here.

For those working with stage pyro there are a couple of important points...

1) For the first time there is a clear statement about the supply of stage pyro to under-18s. It will become an offense to supply T1 material to anyone under 18 years of age. It will become a further offense to supply T2 material to persons who do not possess 'specialist knowledge'. A breach of these rules could see the person supplying them end up in jail for 2 years or face a fine of £20,000.

2) For the supply of T2 material the concept of 'persons with specialist knowledge' makes an appearance. To quote the Regulations...

(2) A person with specialist knowledge for category T2 theatrical pyrotechnic articles is any individual who can demonstrate having—
(a) undertaken training recognised in the theatrical profession, in relation to the type of category T2 theatrical pyrotechnic articles to be supplied;
(b) used category T2 theatrical pyrotechnic articles; and
(c) valid liability insurance covering use of category T2 theatrical pyrotechnic articles.

Exactly what constitutes 'training recognised in the theatrical profession' has still to be agreed with the relevant authorities and other interested parties."

If you want to go Pro - add a couple of 0's to that figure, as theres lifting / working at height blah blah blah courses depending on the pyro's that you want to work with.. that will need to be done as well...
