Magnetic Sump plugs

Magnetic Sump plugs by Big Dav on Sat Mar 05, 2011 1:55 am
British Leyland used to have magnetic sump plugs fitted to their engines - anyone fitted one to their Fronty?
Reason I'm asking is another thread has branched out to mention checking the contents of discarded engine oil to assess amount of wear. I would imagine a magnetic sump plug would be beneficial as it would remove some particles during the life of the oil.
I have heard of some people placing a magnet inside the sump pan without any fixing other than the strength of the magnet but would be worried in case it was dislodged and destroyed the engine.

Yes they are a good idea, BUT good quality oil filter should negate the need for a magnetic sump plug in theory as that should filter oil it both directions, I am not sure to what miscron the oil filters work to but iron filings should definitely be caught

Perhaps it was my multipla, but that definitely had iron filings on the plug.

Gazzedy, I take it you just put the magnet on the outside of the oil filter?
