None frontera Related Question, Your Opinions Please

My other half drives an 06 Honda Civic 2.2 diesel. The problem we have is the clutch has started slipping in 2nd,3rd,4th,5th,6th gears :twisted:

I was not to happy when she told me today :evil:

Any way i thought O well we have to get it sorted and phoned my local garage that i use to be quoted ready for it £940 :shock:

They told me its a common fault on the civic 2.2 as they have a dual mass flywheel. Any way i told him where to go and phoned Honda and got quoted £750. Both said about the dual mass flywheel and how that may need changing to costing an extra £1000 :shock:

I have since been on a civic forum who have confirmed that the flywheel will more than likely need changing.

This my dilemma DO I
1, Have the clutch changed and risk that the fly wheel is OK. and chance that the fly wheel has plenty of life in and does not fail in the near future.

2, Have the clutch and fly wheel done and keep the car having to borrow money.

3, Part ex the car in as soon as possible and get a new car.

Your thoughts please.

I'm sure Jammy has just had the same problem with his Golf, but I'm sure his bill was in the 1000's :shock:

If its just slipping then its probably just the clutch plate mate...was there any other noises vibrations that would indicate a dmf failure?

Years ago when M reg cars where 12 months old :lol:

I had a petrol Mondeo and the clutch was going, I opted to trade it in as the whole one side of front suspension had to be removed to get at the clutch, got a new Escort TD and the day I picked it up the Mondeo clutch only just and I mean just made it to the dealers :shock:

was a close call :oops:

Get shut if the flywheel is that fickle, oh curious to the mileage?

There may be a slight judder in 2nd but that may be just the clutch

Clutch is only slipping when you put you foot down at the moment but seam OK if you drive it gentle

Only done 70k with full honda service history

Sounds more like the clutch but that judder could be an issue with the DMF, what do they say on the Civic forum?

It is a very common problem on them as the civic forum has it own thread ( Register your clutch failure here) 25 pages long :shock:

People have had the clutch go with as little as 15k on a 12 month old car :shock:

I would say 80% of people on there had the fly wheel changed at the same time as the clutch but that was under warranty :wink:

and a few have had to pay them selves ranging from £1400 to £2000 for the clutch and fly wheel :wink:

We recently had one dropped on us as a part ex, salesman thought "easy fix, only a clutch"....it appears that the engine produces so much torque that the clutch gives up, apparantly the flywheels have been upgraded to help cope with it,

otherwise great cars tho

Very common fault on these get rid soonest

If you are going to part ex you will only get offered trade price and the dealer will no-doubt pick up on the clutch slip and knock off another heap of money. If you are happy with the car, why not invest in it rather than lose on it. If the new parts are upgraded as meeoo has said then it shouldn't be a reaccuring problem.

Just a thought...but what do those warrantys cover that they advertise on TV that you can buy for your car...

Clutch probably wouldnt be covered as its a consumable as such, but it might cover the flywheel... :wink:

Take it to Liverpool, Manchester or Leicester one sunny friday evening. Park it up in some back lane near a scrappy, lock it up and walk away....... Ring insurance company on the monday, it should be down to the shell by then. Buy new car Tuesday.

Just an idea mind...

I know that the earlier civics had a well known fault with input bearings, and after some pressure Honda extended their warranty on just that part..

have you checked to see if there has been any recalls regarding the DMF failing, there is a chance that it has been missed and with it being roughly only 5 years old it could still be covered by Honda..

Failing that, due to the costs involved, I'd part-ex..

just out of interest my wife has a 52plate civic with the failing input bearing, but just fell short of the warranty extension by 6months..just waiting for her to finish the clutch off (2 more months should see it die) before i do the bearing.

Well i have exhausted all possibilities and options

The best deal i have found for just the clutch is £480 at a local clutch and gearbox centre. They use Blue Point clutches anyone no anything about them :?:
