Sport classed as a soft top?

After wasting an evening going through all the insurance comparison websites I can't believe that my hard top Fronty Sport is classed as a soft top every time I put my registration number in! Do the other Sport owners have this problem? When I bought it last January my original insurers wouldn't cover it because of this, even though I explained that it has a hard roof.

On the registration document they are down as an estate car, the only thing you could have a problem with is if your car has been converted from a convertible soft top from factory spec to a hard topped sport, soft tops where more common before 1995.

Thanks again for your input. My log book does say Estate, so why do the insurance companies think it's a soft top? I did try another sports registration on the vehicle search and that came up as a 4 door which is even weirder!

So if the log book says estate then who do I talk to about having it changed, as I'm sure it's loading my premium.

Estate is the correct category, both my old sport and my current LWB are classed as estates and so will all others here, you will have to get in touch with DVLA to get their records on your car update I imagine.

Things is the hard top is designed to be removable, by the definition of DVLA and VOSA that makes it a convertible, if you take the folding hood off an MX5 and run with the hardtop on its still a convertible.

They have rules as to what makes a camper van, pickup truck, or convertible for instance and take no notice of whats on the log book, thats just filled in by the dealer when the new car is sold so could be anything really.

Ste his Log book does say estate so DVLA allready have the correct record!!!!

Ive never had trouble either, you want to go to Adrian Flux or Frank Pickles at least they know what there talking about.

Aah insurance different from DVLA and VOSA i guess, i only picked up on those because its becoming a big issue in the car modification scene, lots of people being picked up for BIVA testing when they notify DVLA of body style changes, not that it effects us lot as the body on a seperate chassis vehicle is irrelevant as far as your registration number goes.

Our one came up a convertible but then it does have the folding roof on it so its hardly suprising.

Could it be that your number plate has been cloned at any time and that is why its coming up as a soft top

Sorry just a thought here as I too haven't heard anyone else have this problem..

Just another spanner to add, how many seats do your insurers think the car has?
Some think a sport has 5 seats, but it only has 4.
Correcting your insurers on this can save you money as you only have 4 seat belts, you can leagally only carry 4 people.
In the event of an accident, potentally there is 1 less person on board that could be injured hence your premium should be reduced.

All food for thought, still a bugger though! So do insurance companies retrieve their info from VOSA then instead of the DVLA?

Not VOSA, Insurers use the DVLA data bases.

I'm with the NFU and my truck is simply classed as a Transglobe Sport, I've just phoned them up to check it, and they don't have any loading whether it's a soft or hard top.

It will depend on the insurer i reckon, they dont all use the same criteria, for instance adrian flux want you to list every single mod on a vehicle, but Footman James didn't care what mods were on my mk1 escort as long as it stayed under 350bhp and the agreed valuation was under 30 grand.
