ok got a bit of a problem ...im going on a 9 day trip to morocco mid feb problem is which 4x4 to take,,,,i have the disco which has all the bits on it,,, but is a V8 and does about 14-17 mpg,,,or i have my fronty which i use all the time and do a lot of laning with and that returns mid twentys every day and more im quite confident the fronty will make it,it will be well serviced and hopefully have stronger springs on the back as it will be carrying some kit,,,but not to much but it will have a roof tent on it which is 50kg,s or there about got to make a decision in the next week so i can prep for mid feb,,,, any comments or suggestions,,,,kotk...
If im not spannering on the fronty,,,,,,,im spannering on the 101,,or in the hammock,,now bugger of and leave me to it,,,,, http://kevcardno.wix.com/tugs-4x4

Surely it all depends on what terrain you are travelling. Is it all tarmac or is there lots of rough fun bits in between ?

mmmm,,, at this time of the year the mountains are very cold and a lot of snow a lot of the time the high roads are blocked,,so we are heading for the south going to agadir then on to tan-tan then heading for the desert and then onto the atlantic coast so it will be mainly sand and some rocky tracks but getting down there it will be motorway but the best part is petrol is cheap,,,,so what ever i use it shouldnt be to expensive.,,,, In some places you can pay in euros. Price of fuel 7.5dh for diesel, 10.4dh for unleaded 95-octane petrol (widely available now it seems). Western Sahara (south of Tan-Tan): diesel 5.5dh; leaded about 7.5dh (no unleaded down here yet, but it's coming). In the Spanish port enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla the price of diesel is now more than northern Morocco, €0.92 or 10.1dh. Unleaded petrol is almost the same as Morocco, €0.99 or 10.9dh. In other words diesel is cheaper in Morocco, petrol is the same. Monday, December 27, 2010 1 British Pound = 13.15622 Moroccan Dirham 1 Moroccan Dirham (MAD) = 0.07601 British Pound (GBP) SO THATS ABOUT 13 DIRUM TO THE POUND AND THAT MAKES DIESEL ABOUT 40-45P A LTR,,,,,,,,,,,

Least the heater will work in the fronty---- I suppose it depends on what you like driving best, as for fuel cost comparisons, if that is the driving factor for you then sell the v8 to me

Easy, what is the easiest to repair should one break down, including parts availability How far between fuel/water stops? s you may need to carry more, more fuel = more weight= more fuel usage. If you are hitting snow the drive train of the disco would be better, but if not it doesnt matter How many passengers? whiz the rear seats up in the sport, should be enough room.

Depending on your spares list your taking have you condiered finding out which is better for getting repaired over there just in case the dreaded happens.

Hi, unfortunatly I'd have to say take the Disco. Purely because of the spares situation and the fact its already modded and you can get more stuff in. One point to remember, all that leaded petrol is going to knacker your cats, so you may want to remove them before you go. Cheers Neil

YES THAT MIGHT BE A BIT OF A PROBLEM WITH THE CATS USEING LEADED FUEL,,,HOW LONG CAN YOU GO WITHOUT THEM KNACKERING AND WHAT WOULD THE RESULT BE ????? AND ANOTHER PROBLEM IS SOUTH OF TAN-TAN THERES VERY LITTLE OR NO PETROL SO FINDING IT COULD BE A PROBLEM..I MIGHT HAVE TO TAKE MORE JERRY CANS, I WAS TAKING 2 BUT MIGHT HAVE TO TAKE 4 BUT I DONT LIKE TRAVLING WITH PETROL IN CANS,,,BUT ALL THIS WONT BE AN ISSUE WHEN THE 101 IS FINISHED ITS RUNNING A DIESEL,,, DOES THE FRONTY RUN A CAT AND I SUPPOSE IT WOULD HAVE THE SAME EFFECT IF YOU USED IT WITH LEADED FUEL,,???? also i have plenty of spares for the disco,,,thats my business,,i supply spares down here so thats not a problem,,but i have to send back to the UK for fronty spares,,,,, so at the moment its looking like the disco is going,,,,,but nothing decided yet,,,,

You have prety much answered your own questions. Fronty spares you cant get withought having them shipped from the uk Disco parts you have everywhere as this is your business You the disco inside out so if anything went wrong you would be able to fix it due to the nature of your business You can carry more in the disco The drive train on the disco is stronger Its a thirsty beast but carry more fuel I would take the disco
Regards Ady Pics of the motor can be found hereComment on the motor here

Ive seen vx cavaliers in the desert so engine parts might not be an issue I think what you mentioned and sealant should just about cover the parts for the sport and maybe a spare air filter. The only thing I would really worry about on the sport is cooling the engine as they tend to run hot. Also the part time 4wd will save a lot of fuel issues. Most Dakar cars are IFS
