What do you Guys Think

Postby BigDek on Tue Sep 14, 2010 8:35 pm

Hi chaps, been looking at Fronteras for the last month or so, both petrol and diesel, but all have had their little problems, either mechanical or body wise, and it will only be doing about 5-6 k a year so the cost of the extra fuel wont kill me, also like the simplicity of petrol, with no turbo or pump to go wrong, then the other day I looked at a 2000 2.2 petrol in fantastic condition for the year, 65k miles with full service history, 4 new tyres and exhaust, 12 months MOT and 6 months of tax for a price of £2,200, so is it worth it. Also been reading up on the faults of the 2.2 petrol motor, with head gasket troubles and bottom end problems, so now I've got my self a bit worried, is it a forgone conclusion that one of them will strike, there seems to be quite a few around for sale with blown bottom ends, what do you guys think.

Thanks in advance Dek

Thats far to expensive, for that money you could get a later DTI, the pump is only a problem if you run out of fuel or use the wrong fuel.

Hi, I agree with Drifty.... waaaay over priced  . Mines a 2000 w reg 2.2 petrol and I paid £500.00 for mine with 10 months mot and 4 months tax, good tyres the lot!. The only thing was it had a blown head gasket, no big problem, a days workto put right. Head skim, gaskets, bolts, timing set etc about £100.00 doing it myself saved a wad but shows whats poss  , been ok for over 15000 miles now. The head gasket will go at some point. I personally dont think any 2.2 petrol whatever its age is worth more than £12-1500.00, but thats just my opinion.
Cheers

Thanks for the replies, what sort of price should I be looking at, for a 2.2 DTI B LWB Limited model up to about an X reg, in Good Condition, mileage not too bothered about as long as it's not starship mileage, but runs well.

Thanks again Dek

I've just bought a 1998 2.2 RS as a winter project / plaything... and also a 1995 Sport for a weekend toy..

see here http://www.fronteraowners.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=36697 pics and things on the RS..

doing an engine rebuild at the momemnt, car was £400, rebuild costs - £440.65, thats new everythings, oil seals, bearings, pistons, valves the lot.

got another £65 for a crank balance / grind if needed.. so back on the road for £900 all in with a 'new' engine, then my quest for Frontera world domination begins - today the drive - tomorrow the world!

£2k is a whole heap of cash for a car 2 years younger than mine.

As with any car / lawnmower / chainsaw - basically ANYTHING that has moving parts.. Things can - and normally do - go wrong.

They can be fixed, and Frontera parts arnt overly expensive and can be sourced from most reputable retailers (HellFrauds, motor factors, independant parts shops... etc), theres quite a bit of room to work on them, they are not space age technology - so anyone with a basic understanding of mechanics, a socket set, set of spanners, screwdrivers and a swear box can do the basic maintenence themselves. If its something a bit more "involved" then the answers are normally on here or just a post away..

Good luck with the hunting, if you find one, there may (more than likely  ) be a member local to you who can cast an eye over it for a second opinion..

:( Just noticed on the ebay write up the speedo sticks this is an instrument cluster problem in its early stages [see related forum ] just another little fronty problem that occurs around the 65-75 k mileage
I have KLEPTOMANIA and when it gets really bad I have to take something !
