My new 95-96 2.8tdi swb fronty has done just over 160,000 MILES but the engine doesn't smoke apart from a little short puff on 1st startup, it pulls well and is pretty tidyand starts 1st time every time so far! It does seem a big improvment on my oler 2.3tdi with 40,000 less miles.she smoked and was a pig to start But my question is what is the maximum miles you have seen on the 2.8 in mile please ? I know its down to regular oil service's but thought it would be interesting to see/hear

148,000 Which, considering she has spent three years in a barn and 1&1/2 Years sitting here seems quite high. That's almost half it's life not being used.

Once had a 1 Million mile party in a purple London Cab that we used as a breakdown wagon, and that was back in 1975.

At that time it was still the BMC / BL 2.5 straight 4 diesel engine ( worked on those as apprentice and later) and I would bet it had at least 5 engines and or rebuilds in that mileage, even though as a cab they tended to run 20 hrs a day with driver changes and so were under fairly ideal conditions. To illustrate this, there was cab company inlondon with a 63/4 Vauxhall Cresta ( straight six 2.5lt engine) used as a cab ( private hire would guess) and with proper oil changes ( 3k and 6k with filter in those days) it had done somewhere around 650k miles without any major work which for that era was amazing, but again 24 hr use with driver changes. Another was a Housing development a bit later ( 70s) where all the flats were supplied in each block by a petrol driven generator, using the Hillman Hunter 1725cc 4 cyl petrol engine to power it ( Oh the days of cheap petrol ) this ran 24/7/365 except for short times off for servicing and oil/filter changes, in this case the absolutely perfect conditions for any engine. When they were taken out and mains elec fully used, they estimated the engines ( 7 off if I remember rightly) had done the equivalent of over a million miles each. It shows that which Castrol always put in their ads, the most wear on an engine is the first few minutes of running. All interesting stuff Mike

Harder and harder to find. I think the engine will outlasst the truck to be honest ... mind if it does go we all have the option of dumping in the 3.1 Trooper engine instead. Direct fit if you get the earlier mechanical fuel pump version.
