Newbie advice required for 1st time off road

Postby th4neuk on Sun Apr 04, 2010 7:46 pm

Hi All,

My work are organising a 4x4 day up in yorkshire and I would imagine we will be using the sites landrovers. However it seems a shame to pass up the oppurtunity having a go in the truck if they will let me and have a "mild" course.

I've never driven offroad and the car is very much standard with road based tyres etc.

I guess newbie questions are do I need to do anything before going and next and probably stupid question  How is the best way to use the 4x4 system on the car?? It is a 53 plate b series lwb so has the 4wd button on the dash and hi/lo box thingy.

I'm a bit worried about this axle wind up thing I've read about so do I leave it in 2wd until I get stuck or do I stick it in 4wd as soon as it gets muddy etc?? Also when is the best time to use the low ratio box??

Sorry for the being a bit naive on this but as well as using the car for towing the race car I would like to at least try and get it dirty lol.

Any help or pointers to what I should be reading would be appreciated.

Cheers

Alan

As long as your on loose ground or even grass you need not worry about wind up, just dont engage 4wd on solid roads like tarmac.

Grab a cuppa and read through here.

If it's a "Corporate" style event mate then it's unlikely they will let you take your own vehicle onto their course / track due to the constraints of their Public Liability Insurance.

If your after having a go off road in your Fronty then you might be better off finding a local pay & play day. The majority of these of set runs for your averidge novice driver / road biased car to give you a taster in relative safety.
Or the other option is to start another thread asking for other local FOG members who go Green Laning to get in touch and see if they can take you to do a few more sedate local lanes so you can see if you enjoy it (I'm sure will) and you'll then also have other's there who will be able to offer assistance should you get into difficulties.

Which ever way you go, hope you enjoy your first trip off road . :D

Thanks for the help guys mucho appreciated. Crikey that took some reading lol.

Yes it is a corporate event which I think is here

http://www.yorkshire4x4.co.uk/

Dunno if they'll let me try mine of the beginner bit maybe (although as you say they may not want to with insurance and stuff)

Will take your advice on a pay and play day though.

Do I need to do anything special to the car like take the mud flaps off or anything like that which might break when trying it?? Obviously checking all the fluids etc goes without saying,

Cheers
