isuzu mu v frontera swb?

my son in law and his mate have just been round to borrow my compressor and air tools, and they turned up in the other lads mu, 1997 2.8 automatic withonly 77000 kms on the clock, only problem is its an imported right hand drive from japan, so his wife wont drive it, after talking about it and having a drive i find it a nice moter,he has expressed an interest in doing a swop for my opel campo pickup truck as mine is left hand drive, the plus points for me are its the same as my swb 96 2.8 fronty, its automatic better for my arthritus and i can use my fronty for spares, bad points are loading on insurance, and are there any parts that are perculier to mu would value all comments please regards ken

The Mu 2.8 is not intercooled and has a little less hp power than the frontera 2.8 I think the turbo boot and fuel pressure is lower to, being an auto it will be thirstier and added I think they are a tad heavier than the Fronty.

They do have more toys as standard and if its got the G80 code it will have LSD.

All the suspension is pretty much the same.

LSD = limited slip differential
G80=the code on the bulk head telling you that you have LSD :D

Its easier to fit a top mounted intercooler from a 3.1 trooper or 3.1 MU as the area around the front is a bit tight, but it is possible a few Austrailian guys have fitted front intercoolers 8)

Being a later 97' model it may have an intercooler fitted???

G80 code on the options plate. Usually on the bulkhead, passenger side. G80 = LSD = Limited Slip Differential.

If you stop with one wheel on wet grass and the other on tarmac (say a grass verge) in 2wd and try and accelerate the wheel on the grass will spin. Little or no power will go to the wheel on tarmac. This is known as an open differential.

An LSD limits this spin to a certain degree, usually a percentage of the total torque available to both wheels.

An intercooler cools the air being sucked into the engine, colder air being denser absorbs more fuel = more power. Works just like the cooling system radiator but about half as tall. Usually placed in front of the cooling system rad or on top of the engine with a bonnet scoop like on a Trooper.

Personally before considering this I would look into what else the same automatic gearbox is fitted into as MU`s are a bit thin on the ground :wink:

My chevybravafing is a Jap import izusu TFS55...
It has the non-intercooled 2.8...and its goes alright, even on 33's...
Main difference driving it compared to Sals 2.8intercooled sport, is it feels like it runs out of boost sooner, wheras sals keeps building power more to higher revs...
I dont tend to rag diesels on the road, I tend to drive at a speed that they seem happy at, and accept that the journey might take 10 mins longer...
There seems little point revving the chevy hard, it pulls just as well if you shift a bit earlier and use the low rev torque to pull you along..
That being said the MU is a lot smaller and lighter than the LUV (doublecab pickup) so should go ok with the non intercooled 2.8...
Big plus point is the imports dont generally have all the EGR rubbish on them :dance:

No, all Trooper where IFS :wink:

Any 2.8 will do for a conversion, only thing is if change the axles, you will need leaf for leaf and coil for coil.
