Tailgates on fronties????

Just noticed...
not very observant me...
that lwb side opening tailgates are hinged on the other side to the sport tailgates....
Sports being hinged on the rhs and lwb on the left...

Never noticed before...

I wonder why they both dont open the same way????

It's a lights and legalities thing Greg... Also why SWB's have lights in the bumpers (and Disco's etc etc...)

When parked by the side of a road, assuming you're going with the flow of traffic, you have to be able to see the rear lights (the parking light thing), so the SWB's have bumper lights, else the spare tyre would block parking lights if the tailgate was open.
Same with lots of other 4x4's...

Mind you, how this affected European drivers of LWB's, where they're on the other side of the road, I'm not sure.

even more confusing is my SWB A opens the other way to my SWB B??? Dont know how that fits with the lights theory

The A was a throw back to the Isuzu MU and that door opened the same way, they must have just carried the design across without much thought, remember the EU didnt rule us as much in them days

The reason why your tailgate opens a different way from SWB 'a' as opposed to 'b' is that the 'a' was the opel/europe based model where it opened on the left which is the drivers side over there, so if your parked with the flow of the traffic, the door stops you stepping out into the live traffic. For UK markewts they corrected that in the series 'b'
