Where to stick your number plate...

Postby harwood8472 on Tue Nov 03, 2009 5:20 pm

Sorry if this is in the wrong place or has been answered elsewhere...

I recently put a full length roof rack on my LWB along with some spots, the spare wheel and just for the hell of it the number plate only to be told by almost everyone whose seen it (along with a smug smile) that its illegal and the number plate has to be within a meter of the road?? All the DVLA website says is that it has to be mounted on the front of the vehicle, as close to vertical as possible and clearly visable... which it is!

My mate has his fixed to the bonnet of his hilux and as its got a 6" lift its out of sight for most people!! Anyone had any run ins with the fuzz over this matter?

Think you need to consult the construction & use regs to find that info

Warning this is just my opinion NOT factual!

I would not worry about it...its clearly visible and I would point out if challenged that you positioned it there so it doesn't become obscured by mud when off-roading..... that way you are trying to stay within the law...

I know nothing of a rule saying that it must be less than a metre from the floor....that would rule out most military and agricultural stuff, and any big 4x4 where the standard plate position will be more than a metre up..

The fact is the plate will be readable by the greed machines, the only issue for you could be if a speed camera picks up your plate over the roof of the speeding car in front of ya, but then the photo will clear you...

I know loads of people who run plates on the roof rack, and they have not had probs...loads of vehicles have their rear ones there also (luton vans etc)...

Some people seem to love to quote the law given any oportunity if they see someone enjoying their car or doing something different...
sad gits need to get a life and find a hobby...
Guarantee if they won the lottery they would drive a car with a personalised plate with illegally spaced or altered lettering!

I bet their car windows are obscurred by silly stickers which itself is in contravention of construstion and use as obscures vision...but cos its not different and loads of people do it they think its ok...
Get a new sticker made for em "My other car, if I had one, might be interesting!"
or "Clone driver driving the same thing as everyone else"
or "I had an idea once, but I ignored it and went with the crowd!"

Leave it there mate...show em you are a rebel! 8) 8) 8)

Can't find anything about the height from the road, think this is the relevant legal stuff if you fancy a read :)

I run a load of transport and all my 5 to 7.5 ton lorry's have their number plates at the top above the rear doors - the same can be said for many Luton type vans out there also .

Cheers yeah couldn't agree more, the first two guys to pull up and offer their legal insight were in an aygo or sumot equally small and plastic! Anyway I found this digging around online

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2001/20010561.htm#7

it's the official government legislation, basically what I thought, you can stick your number plate to your face as long as it's visible from the front. Now I have to go bolt more lights to my roof coz they seem to upset people too lol :axe:

And to add my tuppence-worth... I've driven assorted HGV's where the numberplate on the front has been fitted just below the windscreen (so well over a metre from the road) cos of the number of times it was forcibly removed from the bumper area.
Side note, I do tend to have an annual discussion with my MOT tester over my choice to put my tax disc at the top of the windscreen behind the rearview mirror. Policemen never seem to have an issue with it, as long as said disc is there, and readable.
