Any good guessers out there?

Postby shealesy on Wed Jul 08, 2009 9:44 pm

As a few will know im looking to buying my first Frontera.

One of my regular (once a month or so) runs is from Aberdeen to Colchester, which via the M6 is around the 550 mile mark, my indestructible old Astra could do it on just a touch over 2 tanks, i'd have to fill up somewhere before ipswich (quick boring way) or somewhere on the M25 (stupid but more involved way) and i'd get to Colchester with about 3/4 tank left. But that was after much coasting, relatively gentle driving, 75-80 all the way with a heavy foot pulling out of services/slip roads etc i managed to coax a 36mpg (vaux figure) upto as near as makes no difference 43mpg car (red-ex works wonders in that thing) :D .
It always costs me about £20 more to get back upto Aberdeen, but then im blaming that on it being uphill going home.

Any ideas what a 2.5TDi fronty will do that on? with the same relatively gentle driving and the heavy foot pulling out
Any tips for getting more MPG on a long run? :feedback:

Edit:
and ive put this in the wrong forum :D anyone got a tow?

Sit on tail of a city link coach they averag 75mph it should just pull you along. Or any large vehicle. Let fast moving vehicle`s pass you an follow them they will suck you along i said along Do not open windows as this create`s drag. Do not fill tank up as it creates weight and not good to have a car full of fuel at motorway speed incase of accident anyway. Don`t stamp on accelorater build up speed whats a few second to let cars pass when you can pull out when it1s clear and gently speed up. Try top watch road ahead watch the traffic use the accelorater not the brake ie do not sit on someone tail if there a que of cars keep distance to aviod braking. drive at night

A well maintained 2.5 on road tyres should achieve 28 to 32 mpg maybe a tad more if your lucky, you wont get near what your Astra did though

I collected my 2.5 from Rugby and drove it home to Edinburgh and we worked it out at just under 40MPG, with sensible driving that is.
Depending on where im driving and on what roads, i can get 400 miles on a tank of fuel, sometimes more.
It is a 97 model but only has 50 odd thousand miles on it and is regularly serviced.

Which of the models has the best MPG? I've got a 2.2dti and its not too bad. Can do a run down to Edin and back for £40 and thats sitting at about 85 most of the way so i guess driving "sensibly" it must be able to do it quite efficiently. I would guess the bigger engine would be more comfortable on the motorway though.

Good to see another member from Aberdeen
