towing a car advice wanted?

if you are towing a car from place of storage to another does it have to be taxed and insured?

this is what I found for you

It is only legal if it is off the ground i.e. on a trailer. If it has any wheels touching the road it need to be taxed, insured and MOTed. The only exception is that it does not need a tax or MOT if it is being taken directly to an MOT testing station for a pre booked MOT.

I mot'd me mates rally car last weekend been laid up for 6 months he had it insured and booked the mot slot and got stopped by the plod on the way home :lol:

i sold a car a few months back no mot no tax on a sorn,the guy turned up with a straight bar a towing board and a flashing amber and just dragged it off.i think it all boils down to if the plod can be bothered to stop you.

I recovery alot on an a-frame, saves on a 2nd driver. Both vehicles Should be taxed, Mot, If the vehicle is being towed, it should be covered by the towing vehicles insurance.

There has been alot of disscussion about A-Frames on the omegaowners forum and they also have past and present boy's in blue, normal beat to traffic, and the consensus remains a very GREY area

I have presonally towed a 3.0 V6 Omega Elite on an "A-Frame" with only a trailer board with another 3.0 Omega...100% weight 1:1 up the M5 at 56mph even passing a traffic car doing 50mph, They didn't bat an eyelid.

another occasion while filling the Fronty up with derv, while collecting another Omega NOT at 100% 1:1 A Thames Valley Traffic Car pulled along side and told me to go to the Lorry Park in the services and the Tax was out of date on the towed car. Although they let me carry on they said the Officially the car should be taxed and mot'd, or at LEAST 2 wheels off of the ground (Try That While Towing A Reliant Robin) :lol:

I agree that it depends on how the law is acted upon but also how it is interpreted

The law is very clear and is as Roo has explained.
If the car is not road legal and is not going directly to a prebooked MOT, it must be totally off the road surface.
There is no grey area here.

the car will be insured in my name and will be going to an mot station straight from picking it up to be dropped off and mot'd later that day. all i need to do is find time to pick the thing up at some point next week.

Even Trade plates do not cover a vehicle without MOT or that is otherwise un roadworthy.
We had a minor incident with a BRAND NEW vehicle being driven on trade plates and it turned out that as the vehicle wasn't registered, it technically was not covered by insurance, despite the plates being fitted

if you have a mate in the car trade with garage plates get him to move the car for you
