Hi Peeps Looking at buying a VW T4 Transporter to convert into camper for touring. Question I have is to do with this.....and is mainly directed at you guys with diesals Theres a 2.5TDi thats up for grab but there is a problem with the engine. The guy says it is using water and blowing a lot of white smoke. It's not losing any oil either. What could be the cause of this? Opions please......is it possible that it will be an economic fix or a 1500 engine? Thanks for looking..... Gaz,

So getting this straight, some body has offered you a 2.5tds bare engine for £1500 that has potentially got a blown headgasket ?? If it has been cooked apart from a blown head gasket it may quite possibly have cracked the head as well This engine has one head gasket but four separate heads Still confused about where the VW comes in ??

the vw 2.5 does not have 4 seperate heads, Its basically the same as the 2.4 engine but with a few tweeks to the fuel system and an extra 100cc
The head job is pretty easy to do as the from end comes off the van complete with rads etc. I will warn though they are common for cracking heads which could render the head scrap and there not easy to get hold of.
We charge about 350 to do headgasket at work including skim and pressure test and you could add about 125 to that if you want to replace cambelts (2 of them one at each end of head) at same time
We do a lot of vw and Audi stuff at work and I would say an aveage of 1 in 5 have a cracked head
