ABI Insurance Shake up

Was doing a bit of surfing the net last night and came across an article about car insurance, just recently (October 2008) the ABI reclassified and bumped up the number of insurance catagories from 1-20 to 1-50 and after some digging no matter the size of your Fronty (as long as it's standard) the insurance group the Frontera falls into is insurance group 10, don't know if any of you know of this or are even interested? but just thought i would post a bit of info.

**Added On** i forgot to mention that the insurance companies have been given til December 2009 to change to the new catagories.

Ah, I read about this a while ago. If I get it rightly they are increasing the risk rating from 20 places to 50 places.

As far as I can see most existing cars remain in their current categories (frontera's are mostly group 10, while newer B series 3.2 and 2.2DTi are I think group 12). It is the newly registered cars that are mainly affected.

Its a way of evening out the group ratings so that the difference in insurance is less per group rating. So a group 12 will only be marginally higher then a group 10 whereas with a 20 group rating that would increase the cost of your insurance by a significant amount.

It is mainly to do with newer cars that have all sorts of fancy gadgets equipped such as reversing sensors, sat nav built in, multi cd players etc as standard.

Thatcham security recently introduced the new set of fifty groups, which they are using alongside the existing twenty groups in testing new cars. The move to fifty groups means that each model of car can be more accurately banded with similar cars. Some insurers are now using fifty groups in their premium calculations.

As far as I know not all insurance companies will be adhering to the new 50 group idea or at the very least they havent all adopted it yet.

I've just changed over from a Rover 200 BRM LE to a Frontera 2.8 lwb my insurance was aprox £750 a year , now a much more pleasant £ 280 , just waiting for a refund of 3 months money .
