HI all thinking of getting a Frontera as my first 4x4-they seem to offer very good value but unsure whether to go for a petrol or diesel.I wont be using it for work just weekends camping taking the dog out etc.I have seen a nice 96 lwb 2.2 petrol-what do you experts think?

i own a 2.2 petrol and my advice is get yourself a 2.8 diesel much stronger engines the 2.2 petrol engine is not the best engine in the world they have a habit of throwing a conrod out of the block if you do go for the 2.2 ask how often the oil was changed when it was last serviceand how many miles on the clock and listen to the engine for any strange knocks

Hi & Welcome to the wonderful world of FOG :wink: ... i've just bought a lwb 2.2Dti and love it ... you won't be dissapointed buying a Frontera this is my 2nd one ... as for choice i personnaly would go for diesel but the experts will be along soon too guide you down the right path ... You'l get plenty of good (The best) advice of these guys and gals! (Must remember the lahahadies!) :dance:

If you keep your eyes open you should be able to get a 2.2dti for that money these days, buyers market and that, just make sure that whatever diesel you buy hasnt been run on veg oil :wink:

I only paid £1200 for my 99 2.2Dti lwb ... guy had it advertised for £1475 needed a few little stupid fiddly jobs done i just made mountains out of molehills lol :dance:

I paid £750 for a 1998 2.2 petrol SWB. Fair enough it chucked a big end bearing a few weeks later but I repaired that myself.

However, the petrol engines are a bit of a weak spot unless they've been looked after properly. They take a bit of a thrashing to get going but are comfortable on motorways and mine pulled a car trailer with a Vauxhall Omega on it from Birmingham to Washington just yesterday without any issues, barely knew it was there after a while.

Just keep on top of them and any Fronty will be a good buy.

well i paid 200 quid for mine two years ago and its still pulling like a train at 197,ooo :dance:( touch wood) :wink:
