True, this was discovered some time ago, but in my opinion they took the right course of action.

To be clear, this is not something that can be fixed on a local PC level, this affects one of the major components of the Internet, and rather than broadcast the fact that there was a security problem so all the hackers and script kiddies could try and bring down the world, they got together, worked out a fix, and now are deploying it.

They are still not divulging the true nature of the problem, to give the maximum number of people chance to work these security fixes into place before the hacking begins in earnist.

So, the practical upshot? Well, as end users, be concerned - yes, but do not panic. As is so often the case, the level of current threat is low, however the media love to use the potential level of threat to scare everyone and make things a worthy news story. They are fixing it, and all will be well in the world.
