Fettling the new truck...

Postby Trugga on Sun Jun 01, 2008 8:20 pm

It takes time to iron out the little niggles when you take on a new truck, I remember when I bought the 2.8. Now I can start all over again with the 2.0...

Following a days laning yesterday, a number of issues became apparent.

1 Fuel leak
Popped to the local motor factors and bought some fuel pipe (to fit either side the fuel filter on the chassis) - I bought the wrong bloomin size. At least it stops dripping once the system depreasurises itself - a job for later in the week perhaps.

2. Gear lever gaiter
Whilst under the car looking at the fuel leak, I noticed the gear lever gaitor was not fitted properly. Due to the 2.0 gear box being quite far forwards, I ended up removing the centre and front console to refit the gaiter.

3. Drivers window.
When laning, I attempted to close the drivers window to prevent my face from being torn apart by the shrubbery that lined the side of one particular track. Somehow a large twig got in to the door and caused the scissor mechanism to buckle. I managed to bend it all back into a reasonable shape and the window now appears to work ok.

4. Winch cable.
Following it's use yesterday, I took the opportunity to manually run the cable out and power it back in neatly, ready for it's next use.

5. Rear door handle.
Having reversed into a tree (damn opaque soft top windows), the rear door handle trim is broken and pushed into the door skin, in so much that the latch would not open the door. A piece of wood and a large screw driver managed to lever the latch and "pop out" the dent, so that latch mechanism now works. I put a bit of tape over the number plate lamp (to stop a white light shining rearwards) - I need to now find a handle from a scrappy.

5. Brake bias.
Whilst under the car, I had a look at the brake bias system to see how it works. It looks a little seized and a retun spring was half broken and hanging off - I'll source anew spring before retuning the fixing it and further working out how it works.

6. Steering column
Also managed to tighten up the snap bolts holding up the steering column - that now feels much better.

A good afternoon I thought

My car weekend went to pot again

Though at the local car boot in Lydiate I came across a guy selling aerosols for a £1 each so I stocked up, I got a Halfords tin of electrical contact cleaner 400ml a 600ml of carb cleaner and 400ml of Open Gear and Wire Compound all for £3, just the contact cleaner is more than that in Halfords.

Ok my point in this thread

This should interest those with wire winches or mechanism open to the elements,
Open Gear and Wire Compound
It states, provides lube film for open chains and gears , cables and wire ropes . It also protects buckels, shackles, cable clamps, exposesed bolts, levers and switches, against adverse enviromental conditions.
Apperently it creates a film to protect the gear.

Seems a good thing.

Pic anyway as thought this may be of interest
