Tinted windows, (privacy glass)

i have tinted windows on tailgate, and all back windows. i dont want the rest done. Now your wondering what the heck im on about :lol:

Well, while watching TV the other night, a car was pulled over for tinted windows. to drivers door and passenger door, Mr policeman got his light detector out and said there was not enough light going through and the tints have to be taken off, before the car could be moved. Ok this i can agree with.

But today got me thinking, driving along, sun was out for a second, got me sun galsses out. So now im thinking whats the difference, between tinted glass and sun glasses, do my sun glasses have to let a certain amount of light through, or is there another reason for tinted windows letting light through.

The point is, your sunglasses come off when the sun goes in (normally :lol:

). You can't really take the tinting off at night.

There are different levels of tint, not not sure of the legal level, but there is one :lol:

Hi, Regarding tinting.

You can have the front side windows done but if i remember rightly it cant stop more that 25% of the day light from coming in.

Seek the advice of your local tinting work shop.

The car pulled over the other night was way above this figure and they got off with a peel it now fine........lol

Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 as amended
specify the minimum levels of light that must pass through the
windscreen and front side windows.

The limits are:
Motor Vehicles first used before 1 April 1985:
The windscreen and front side windows must allow at least 70% of
light to be transmitted through them.

Motor Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be
transmitted through them.
If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light,
then the vehicle does not meet legal requirements.

If you are the driver -
- You must not drive a vehicle on the road with the windscreen
or front side windows excessively tinted. You may also invalidate
your insurance with this modification, particularly as the vehicle
is likely to be illegal.

If you are a tinting company -
- You must not modify, or offer to supply, a part that when fitted
to a vehicle means that it does not comply with Construction &
Use Regulations.

i thought the same thing with the tinted visor on my bike helmet, but the daft thing is the tint on my helmet is that as the light quality drops, the visor shows through more red, so it is actually safer.

I have to say I bought my V6 on a bright day in the summer with its tints already in. In the winter and at night it is dangerous, even driving in daylight on the motorway with the front windows down there is enough contrast to stop my eyes focusing through the tint at cars as I swap lanes.

I am tempted to try and remove the front windows tint, but it is nice to drive around in total privacy.

I may be wrong here, but apart from the light thing, is there not something about police being able to see the driver of the vehicle? For example to be able to see if he/she was using a mobile phone, or wearing a seat belt.

i had a mondeo with a middle of the road tint and got pulled. i got a prohibition against it and told where to park it and how i could get it home, i had the savvy to ask if i could get the tints off could i could use it. i had to peel every bit of tinted film off before i got the paper work saying it was ok to drive. after he put the light meter on them they were only letting 18% of light through...and these werent even a dark tint

you can ask for a second opinion as the machine may not be calibrated,
