wet carpet

Postby yorkie 22 on Mon May 05, 2008 10:34 pm

hi all come out to my long wheel base frontera the other day and the drivers foot well was full of water,i removed the plastic trim next to the accelertor immediately and the trim along the door and lifted the carpet and i took the drain plugs out of the floor to drain of. I then had a look up with the torch water is dripping down the wire harness and on to the electrics that are behind the plastic trim that i removed next to the accelerator. Since then the central locking has stopped working. In the bottom corner of the windscreen it has started going white. Is this water that has got behind the bonded seal off the windscreen and dripping inside and down the harness wires.0n the outside of the windscreen their is some plastic trim running up both sides of the windsceen can this be removed to attempt to re-seal it. Or is it a new windscreen. Any HELP at all greatly appreciated (P reg) THANKS

I let a couple of people try and re-bond, but in the end a new sreen is best.

The white milky bit is where the two layers of glass and the plastic interlayer are delaminating, this is caused through age. I was a windscreen fitter for 12 years and can honestly say that rebonding an old fronty screen is not really an option as the screen has to be removed and re-fitted. (a process that will almost certainly crack a delaminating screen). You can check if it is a leaking screen by removing the plastic stips you were talking about, (they will carefully prize up), pour fairy liquid around the outside edge of the glass and (providing you have access to one), blowing compressed air from the inside around the edge of the screen. This will blow bubbles where there is a leak.

If you are fully comp insured, take the hit (usually £60 or so excess) and have a new screen fitted

Hope this helps
