Advice from the north please

Hi Guys,
I've got to travel from Suffolk to Carlisle tomorrow morning, and I would like some advise from our northern members-
Would going up the A1 and then across on the A66 be ok at the moment or would I be better off using the A14 and M6?
Can't help feeling that the M6 is going to be mind numbingly boring, but I don't really fancy getting stuffed on the A66 either.
Any advice would be appreciated. BTW Won't be travelling in the Fronty- its a Mondeo for me for the next 3 days !!

you could try A14 M1 jct 23a onto A50 to stoke then M6 to carlise

you will miss B/ham out

if you fancy a senic route up M1 to 35a and take the woodhead pass pick up M67 then M 60 M61 and it puts you on M6 at preston

you might hit traffic at jct29/30 this way depending on time of day


with the wind forecast the A66 might be shut to highsiders causing problems with traffic

Thanks for that Smiffy, I may well try Woodhead pass cos on a scenic road the trip will certainly feel shorter than the M6 for miles and miles and miles............

I would go for smiffys first choice via Stoke we have no road works around at the moment, But it is always very slow in the morning around Warrington I think it is road works there, Enjoy the run

if the 66 is closed due to winds another option is up to newcastle and across the 69 which will bring you out at carlise the quickest run is a14 to the m6 but i know what you mean its a long and boring run

M6""" I live up that area 60 miles to Carlisle and regulaly Drive to Exmouth the M6 is a bit boring but once you hit the edge of the lakes it's Jubbly.
A much more direct route aswell.
I find the M6 safer than the A1 as the A1 is mainly Duel Carriageway

Thanks for all the advice guys, it was appreciated.

As luck would have it, the A14 and M6 were both at a standstill anyway on Tuesday so I ended up on the A1-A66 route. It wasn't too bad- just a bit windy !!.
As it appears that I will need to go back soon,I will try the M6 next time to see what Big Bill means about the bit near the lakes.
