Forgot another thing with Yota's ... the CV joints are weaker. The wall thickness between the ball bearings and the hub shaft is quite thin and has a tendancy to deform leading to premature wear on the CV joint. You should only really suffer this with serious off roading ... much akin to our bent tie-rods

I had disco 300tdi before the fronty and sold it for the fronty. They are very thirsty as they are permanant 4x4, think an average was 22 to 25mpg and got bored of it within weeks unlike the fronty which is a better drive, more economical and even after 12 months I still enjoy driving it.

The hilux surfs suffer from head problems I had friends who had them.

The fourtrack would be a choice I would consider. Very capable off road return a reasonable mpg and not badto drive, down fall is parts can be pricey

The trooper much like the fronty. I would describe the drive as a cross between the fronty and disco.

My suggestion stick with a fronty

Fronties do tend to be cheaper as well ... I saw a bog standard Mk.I Trooper sell for almost £1300 the other day with rusty rims and short MOT and Tax.

I had a 300TDi Disco for 3 years. It was a great truck with no rust which was very unusual. The permanent 4WD is handy, but running costs are high even when compared to a temperamental Fronty Dti. The Fronty is a better choice for an 80% road, 20% laning vehicle IMO. As someone else said though, if it's towing you are after the Disco can't be beaten - The Fronty in comparison is dire .

i had a '91 fourtrak and it was brilliant. only got rid cos the floor pan in the back had gone through. side window runners rust as well making it impossible to open the slidey windows. i replaced the leaf springs and it was around £200 from SDN off ebay. a "mate" of mine sells them abroad so i got everyhting i needed for next to nothing. 2 tyres on rims- £5 , new side windows-£5 ,rear diff plate yep you guessed it. handy man to know so if you go for the fourtak give me a shout.
