The secret to the split boots is finding the damaged boot early, on your weekly checks and repairing it ASAP that way you have no need to clean the whole CV out, if you have ran a lot of miles with a damaged boot you are asking for crud to be collected in there so the stretchy boots may be your only option, though with a bit of contortionism I see no reason why they cant be reasonably cleaned out in situ

I do now check mine each session, Ive not had issues and have been lucky not to have any contamination. If I had played a full day in deep mud it could have needed striping, that said if your brave enough to get wet a pressure washer should clean it out.
