wynns engine fulsh or not to engine flush by AskDean on Mon Mar 26, 2012 10:37 am
right come on guys want your opinion.

my lumps been stood for a while not running and just running ti back in after all the problems i have had and it seems to be burning a bit of oil as i get the odd waft of white smoke every now and then. so do i chuck a tin of engine flush in and will it do more harm than good??

so do i chuck it in or not debate open.

Nothing wrong with oil flush (if used as per instructions) although I'm not sure it will cure the issue you have.

When you did the major engine overhaul did you change the valave stem oil seals ?

no it was running ok it wasn't burning oil before it was stood up and its intermittent so i think i will have to get some fresh oil and chuck a flush through and see if it helps as it doesnt do it all the time just every now then so might just be a sticky valve just not seating right.

Yup, it may well right itself. If you suspect hardened valve stem oil seals you can put an additive in that softens the rubber. Allthough I suspect it may just sort itself out with use.

only done 800 miles since got it work and its getting better all the time was smoking like a trooper when i put it together but then i put to much oil in and it burn the extra off so going to flush it as the miss firing and running like a bag of crap will not of helped the state of the inside the engine as it was firing one bank for 2 months before i sorted the 02 sensors out.

so hoping the flush is going to do it or i am going to have to more work i cant afford on the truck

dont flush using "engine Flush" it will remove deposits holding oil in. flush the engine with a cheaper oil. drop out normal put in cheap stuff the drop it and change filter put in fresh good oil

hi gaz

i am getting a bt of smoke when i pull off at the lights some times after doodling along at speed and then stopping so think one of the valves isnt seating properly which is why i was going to run a flush to clear any deposits around the valves i know what your saying about might cause more harm than good but at present cant get any worse i dont think and as it is burning oil i cant afford to keep chucking 5/30 magnatec at 40 a tub in to see it dissapearing out the back in a puff of smoke and i have flush in the shed anyway.

so i think it is worth a go otherwise i am going to have to see about stripping a head and doing the valve stem seals

I understand what Gaz is saying but I use it on every car I buy initially, then I just make sure I service it regulaly thereafter. Not had any issues as yet.

Me? Done it once and I will NEVER use engine flush again, not even on a petrol lawn mower, I'd rather shove a bottle a bottle of washing up liquid in there, it'd still f**k up the motor but at a tenth of the price!

I did the truck 18 months or so ago, followed the idiots guide to the letter but at the time I didnt know that the sump had been made in a way that didnt allow it to drain fully so ended up with about .5ltrs of a flush/oil mix still in there when I replaced the filter and filled with new oil. The turbo made a good job of dying a few days later (threads on here somewhere).
This posting may have been helpfull, on the other hand probably not... Either way, I may have had drink when posting it in which case it's probably not as helpfull as it could have been

Work safe, and remember all technical problems can be resolved with a hammer, the trick is knowing where to hit it and how big a hammer to use (I often find it may also help to have a spare bit in the shed to replace the bit you have just mullered ;) )

Work in Progress (or not as the case may be) I give you.... 'O-no' the truck.

Comments on 'O-no' the truck may be left here

I use it just not on every oil change (1 in 3 changes or something like that).

However i might be wrong but white smoke as far as im aware is not a oil problem.

Always been told never to use engine flush as it can damage your engine, our lasses dad n brother are mechanics and they put a small amout of diesel into the oil and run it for a few mins and then drain as it doesnt remove any lubrication from the engine and cleans it better apparently??? :? But everyone does things differant mate.

Yes, poor it into the oil, it only helps if the seals are not too far gone, it will supple dry seals but it wont repair broken seals.
That as cheap as you can get is camskill.
Oh it take a 100 or so miles to work and best done with fresh oil.

I'm with the "don't use engine flush" boys on this one. It does more bad than good. Try the Forte seal conditioner like mentioned. I used it on my old V6 after a top end rebuild. The one head I used came from a breaker and I was silly enough not to change the valve stem oil seals on it so had a bit of smoke on start up and heavy acceleration. The forte helped :D
