car tax over the internet

as you can pay you tax over the net does that mean you car is taxed from the moment of payment or only when you display the valid tax disk. sure this was somwhere before but cant find it

No, it's still illegal to drive without the disc on display. Even though it's on its way this will not be allowed as a mitigation in a court of law

but anpr cameras should say its taxed but it is offence not to display one

thats what i thought remember seeing it somewhere before better dig my insurance stuff out the pile then

maybe just print of your proof of payment in case you get stopped

I believe it is taxed from the moment you have paid for it,but it is your responsibilty to get the tax disc displayed when the old one has run out,dont think it will cut the mustard if you dont have a valid tax displayed even thought you have paid for it,it does take 5 days for DVLA to post them

cars been sorned for a while so will be easier to fetch from post office rather than wait a few days im impatient

As soon as you pay for your tax - it registers on the system, so you are ok. However you are allowed 14days to purchase tax after it runs out, anyway. Read this recently on the info sent with my tax reminder.
I do mine over the phone, super easy!!

I'm sure there's a grace period whereby you can drive around without displaying the disc for a short period of time. It's a semi-grey area because the rules do state you *must* display it.. but when you tax online, I'm sure there's a blurb about it being okay.

Having checked with a ex traffic officer the basics are;
If the vehicle is SORN and you tax online you must wait for your new tax disc before the vehicle can go on the highway.
If your vehicle is currently taxed, and you renew online you have 5 days grace in which to display your new tax disc after the old disc expires (but you must still display the old one).
If you renew at the post office you will have a tax disc in your hand so no problems.

Failure to display a valid tax disc outside of the grace period would normally be delt with by the officer who stops you by means of a fixed penalty notice and £30 fine (this fine can vary by police force but most are £30).
As perviously mentioned ANPR camera will show the car as taxed so unless they have another reason to pull you, you will not get stopped for no tax, but when you have stopped or parked for example an officer can see you have no vaild disc and can easily nick you.

If you tax disc is stolen, and you have applied for a duplicate disc online, you can drive for 5 days from advising the DVLA without a disc provided you display the following infomation in the passenger side of your windscreen,
Road Fund Licence Stolen
Crime Reference Number #######

Personally I would think the Police genuinely have better things to do than harass someone for something like this. If they were to come across a vehicle with a recently out of date tax disc on display a quick call to control will allow them to check if the tax has been renewed or not.

Call me optimistic, but I would like to think there are at least some coppers out there who aren't narrow minded little hitlers who have a complex because they were bullied at sc

Depending on your last purchase, you have 6 or 12 months to prepare for the purchase of a new disc.
Tax on line, or the post office is open six days a week.. No excuse.
If you’re a last minute merchant like me, buy a 12 month disk then it only happens once a year.

yea got a pt cruiser im putting back on the road and wont be mot'd till the 28th so i'll just fetch the tax to start for feb on the way back

i got my last disc on line the day before the old one ran out. The local community bobbie took interest in the fact that the disc was out of date, but was happy enough with the reciept that you print off. The new disc arrived a couple of days later.
But like it's been mentioned your motor will be taxed as soon as dvla get their pounds so your not going to set off any anrp cameras.
Have to say it's a lot easier getting it on line, rather than digging out all the docs and queing in the post office.

... When you get your tax disc at the post office you take your insurance documents and MOT Certificate in ok, so what happens when you do it on line please? do you have to send a copy of these 2 documents please?

Nope, you either enter your reference number thats on your reminder, or you enter your reg number and V5 document number and then the DVLA system checks electronically that you have insurance and a valid MOT. If you do it then takes you on to the payment screen where you can choose 6 months or a year. Enter your card details and you'll have it within 5 days. Simples.
