A damn good giggle...

Well as the title says, it was. :lol:

Me n Dan we got bored tonight n decided to go for a spin. Didnt really get very far until an :idea:

popped into our heads.
We went down to a fairly local marsh area, which has some cool little tracks through it, now im not sure if they r green lanes or not but they are public byways. So he says leed on if u know where u r goin.....so i did. When we came out at the other end the grin

on his face said it all......so......we went n did it again...................and again......and it was great. Cant wait till we get snow coz it will be awesome.

How can we find out what the roads/tracks are classed as?????

Best bet is to get hold of Ordnance survey maps for the area. Landranger 1:50,000 or Explorer 1:25,000 are the ones to go for.

You are looking for 'Byways Open To All Traffic' (BOATS) and they are marked by a green ++++++++++ on Explorer maps and by red +-+-+-+-+-+-+- on Landranger maps.

There are also 'Other Routes With Public Access ' but the rights of way on these are not shown on OS maps. You would have to go to the local council and ask to see the definitive map for the area.

find them on the landranger map and then look on http://www.way-finder.co.uk or ring the local council and ask the rights of way officer

Continually driving through the same lane/ford just for a laugh rather than just once as part of a journey,will be the sort of thing that the anti 4wd fraternity love to use as ammunition for closing down lanes/fords.

Actually, on a public right of way, you have the right to "pass and re pass", but any more is considered anti social.

ORPAs do appear on OS 1:25k and 1:50k as green and red dots respectively.

Well i'm sorry but i have got to reply to the posts put up by some members on this thread...

As mark stated the lanes he remembered from his youth are on the marshes and therefore there are no houses within approx 2 - 3 miles of where we went, to say that we went there for a laugh i find, personally rather confusing, Is all laning not done for a "Laugh"? we don't use lanes to get from A - B when there are tarmac roads to get us there, i thought they were used as an alternative for something different and fun.... sorry if i got this fact wrong.
To state that the road was a lane also indicates the kind of surface we were driving on, it was not a greenlane and it was/is a public highway....... all be it in a bad state of disrepair but a public road none the less.
Also to assume that we are going there to rip the place up and cause damage because we went for a laugh is down right hurtful, i don't know if this has been said because we are younger 4x4 owners or not, but just because we are younger does not mean we can't respect the area we are driving, but this is how it appears to me.
I can catagorically state that the lanes were driving at a top speed of about 10 - 15 MPH and we were very respective of the surroundings we were in, it was actually quite spectacular to spot an owl fliying out and about so close to a major petrochemical site.
Myself and Mark are both fully aware of the inplications of abusing the lanes with regards to the anti 4x4 lobbys and we would in no way try to bate them into taking action against us and 4x4 owners in general.
OK so i hold my hands up and say yes i had a damn good giggle and loved every minute of my time out last night but to get critisism from other members who do not know, or do not try to find out, the circumstances surrounding the evenings events really does get my goat so to speak.

Right sorry about that but i had to get that off my chest.................... Rant over.

It's the area out the back of Ince and Elton, between Shell stanlow and ICI castner kelner sites. down by the river weaver and the access road goes across the M56 from Frodsham.

"Can't wait for the snow". As someone who doesn't do green-laning this is about the only "4x4 fun" we get with our Sport (which we've had 10 years next week). As soon as the white stuff comes then a good run through the Goyt Valley, Cheshire/Derbyshire (near Buxton) recommended. Anything else, - like a good harmless thrash about on a deserted Ainsdale Beach is deemed hooliganism these days. Any ex-industrial areas may have some nasty surprises waiting for your tyres too! Recreational 4x4s are now not only perceived as being "child killers", "countryside vandals", "kerb and sidewalk hoggers and paving slab crackers" etc. - but now also ozone hole punchers!

Don't forget those bits under a Fronty that corrode easily! Half an hour spent horizontal on some bubblewrap with a brush and a small container of Waxoyle on the brake pipes can save a lot of heartache next MoT time.
