If you want to proof the explosive power of steam,go to your local blacksmith-put a lump of flat bar in the fire & get it bright red-spilt on the anvil-put the bar on top & quickly clout with a hammer.Ear defenders are a really good idea.

I'm sure i read a technical paper on this (or at least something similar, probably a company running a serious experiment to determine the viability) about 6 months ago and it did work but as far as I remember it had an efficiency of about 10%. Compare this to a petrol a petrol engine 25 - 30% efficency or diesel with up to 40% efficiency and it starts to seem like an idea that has little or no merits.

seriously though i did make a hydrogen booster for one of my cars once as after i had fettled with the engine it needed 99octane fuel, just too expensive to keep adding octane boosters. so i made a little hydrogen booster for under £35 with allowed hydrogen gas to flow into the intake through the vacum inlet. increased mpg by 35% which was great put my mpg from 28 to 37.5 :D on my 620ti rover

basically it was an electrolizer producing 3.4ltr/m of hydrogen. Its about a 3-4 amp drain on the battery nothing a lesuire battery cant handle.
to increase the power to produce the hydrogen you just need to increase the frequency of the 12v same sort of idea as the ballast for HDI headlights.

thinking of putting one on the 2.8 frontera??

Hi, This is my first post. I'm very interested in this subject having gone to the link on Shardlows http://www.shardlowautogas.i8.com/ gas conversion page available on the LPG conversions on the FOG front page. On the top ads bar there are various companies trying to sell plans and books exactly as John (Smiffy) link. In fact nearly all the vendors webpages end up taking you to the same animated webpage http://www.runyourcarwithwater.com/?hop=1goodchoic I can't help to be suspicious of this site as it is introduced but a girl called Rachel who looks remarkably similar to a girl called Kara.s who is endorsing their product.
I have a feeling it's a form of pyramid selling as they keep on telling you how once your satisfied you are free to sell the product on and use their marketing tools.
Not to be undeterred I continued looking and found information on a Stanley Meyer, inventor and developer of a dune buggy that ran on HHO exclusively. He died suddenly and his patents ran out in 2007, hence the sudden outpouring if information on this subject. I have found a site that has recorded experiments based on his invention http://peswiki.com/index.php/OS:Water_Fuel_Cell and the results do appear to be promising. One experiment was producing .45lit/min from an input of 3amp/12volt pulsed.
As I'm off work sick I've got time to browse for this information and would consider doing an initial conversion like the one in John's link as it works with fuel injection but the full hho system would require a type of gas convertion and modifcation to engine and exhaust systems.
I'll keep you updated if I find anything further.

I must have missed the posting above mine by Wave. You were getting 3.4lit/min from what I assume is similar to the kit advertised in John's link at the top of the page. If those figures are correct that would be enough HHO to fuel a vehicle 100%. Using LPG as a guide and petrol at 28mpg lpg would be 24 miles per 4.5 lits being .1875 lit/mile. Even the unit I referred to in my previous post would produce enough for 100% fueling. Definetly fuel for thought.

From this link they claim you get better results from a diesel engine http://water4gas.com/2books.htm?hop=naeinc .I've also got a 2.25 land rover lwb so if I try the simpler system on my 2000 frontera I'll make another for the LR and see what the results are. If it makes the LR burn the diesel more completely that will save half a brazilian rain forest per week, therefore being good for the environment too. I used to run the LR on tescos veg oil at 40.5p/lit but at 78p/lit gave up, I think the demand for the oil shot up and all the supermarkets got together and raised their prices at the same time. However diesel has now gone up further thus making it an interesting combination of HHO/Veg oil

If you look at the pictures the unit is based upon Stan Meyers design with the two concentric stainless steel tubes maintaining a small gap between themselves. The unit appears to be very robust. His feed back generally backs up his claims apart from the last one that seems to be from someone after something for nothing. Another of his items is a 1400watt honda generator run by one of his smaller HHO generators requiring 20% of petrol or methanol fuel, after the initial outlay that would be very cheap electricity http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hydrogen-Generato ... dZViewItem
He doesn't mention the need for a frequency resonator which Meyers used to boost the HHO production so there may be scope for better results.

OK, I got a small question for those doing their research into this....

On the pages linked to above, they are saying to use pure baking soda as the catalyst. Now the following is from my dim and distant memory of Chemistry A level a good few years ago, but...

Baking soda in it's pure form is Sodium Bicarbonate. Thus adding water to it produces Carbon Dioxide which is really not going to help the combustion of your engine as it is a combustion supressor. How does the process that you are going to try change that chemical reaction to produce enough combustible gas to power an engine?
