loose steering columb

Her's a good one for home mech's to try....Been to vx to have suspension hights re-set (gt improvement handling) & queried 10mm sideways movement of steering wheel. Quoted me £600+ for new columb & £58 to adjust stg. box. What a laugh we had....what a con! Told them to get a life. Now you know why I hate garages.
Adjusted box in 10 mins. Took 20mins. to discover triangular flange on columb with 3 x 6mm studs/nuts to hold it together (or rather 3 studs & only 1 loose nut!!!!). This is positioned below ign. sw. level & difficult to see, but easily felt. Fitted 2 new nuts, tightened existing one...now solid as a rock & £658+ better off.
Even better, exactly the same fault on my daughter's 2.5td so now saved £1316+ for 1 hours work. If only I could get a job on this rate.
May be coincidence that both Frontys built around june/july 97 or perhaps it was tea-break time half way through build?

The thing is, dealerships/ big garages will be tempted to quote for worse case scenario, A to get rid of you (no profit in it for them) and B because some customers know how to play the game.
They book it in, report a fault ask for a price, book it in, pay the money, then return every week or so with subsequent problems that the garage failed to cure or had coursed by there fix.

Not my video and this is Frontera mk1 i believe i can't get steering housing off as one of the screws has a rounded hear and screwdriver doesn't bit. what is the easy fix for this?

Drill the head off the screw and remove cover, you will then be able to get the screw out with a pair of pliers. To tighten those bolts use a small chisel or dot punch and hammer and tap them round.

yup, the bolts holding this on are sheer security bolts, but use a small hack saw and cut a straight line through it, use a large flat blade screwdriver to undo and remove. or grinder or bolt remover tool, hammer chisel - what ever

goto Halfords / local hardware store and buy 4 m8 bolts and tighten down with a 10mm socket ( I think, cant remember, just remove 1 then match with the same size standard bold and tighten with a socket / spanner ).

Hi before I post this I've just gone out to car and notice mine has play as well just lookedthe mot and it says top mount bearing on steering wheel play mmmmmmm confuse what you think

Try tightening it up as the post above before buying anything for it.

Hi is that the security bolts there on about that need cutting ? To righting them up first
