engine stands

does anybody know the height of the mounting plate on an engine stand ? or more specifically ,how high would it need to be to work on a frontera engine ? its just something we are looking at knocking up at work - we get bored quite often !
obviously we need to spin a full engine through 180 degrees but we were thinking the lower we can get it the better ,maybe someone who has used one can give us some knowledge. any thing you would have on it if you were designing one yourself? and i dont mean drink holders or ashtrays :roll:

I bought an engine stand that is universal. It is about the right height off the floor so that you can place a chair next to it and sit down whilst working on it. I dont think you would want it too high as getting it up there to bolt on in the first place would not be easy as they are damn heavy although I did lift a fully built engine out of my boot and mounted it onto the stand by hand with a little help when lining up the bolt holes.

I would say that so far I have bolted the engines end on but this can be a pain as you need to remove the flywheel. So if you could make up a plate to allow mounting directly to the block where the normal engine mountings would be, then onto the cradle that would be better and you could still spin it with the handle.

yeah its gonna have a universal mounting plate (hopefully) so it will just bolt on to the block , just curious about the height? we reckon around 3foot ?

To be honest its all dependent to how tall you are. I am 6'5" so having something higher would be preferable. If your a lot shorter then you would want something shorter.

Why not make the upright in two sections. One that slides inside the other with a series of holes right through it for a couple of large bolts so you can adjust the height depending on who is using it.

height adjustment is something we are looking at ,a lot depends on weight etc. roughly how much does a complete engine weigh?
