700 kilos in the boot

Postby jmc on Fri Jul 12, 2013 10:04 pm

I have offered to move a safe from Kent to Heathrow.
It weighs 700 kilos.
It probably can't take it but I was thinking of putting in the boot but does anybody know the limit of weight that a lwb Frontera is allowed to have in the back.
I will be also be towing a 2 ton trailer with two motorcycles in it.
Thanks

I would put the safe on the trailer with the bikes if I was you mate...maybe load the bikes sideways one at the front and one at the back of the trailer with the safe over the axle...
Thats gonna be heavy in the back of a fronty, and a sod to get in and out...if you do think of putting it in the truck, then check the bumpstops are both present and correct, you might find them with the axle, and if ones missing its all gonna be a bit crooked and not drive well at all...
Good news is once the axle sits on the bumpstops, it doesnt go down anymore, so long as you keep adding more air in the tyres!
Legally speaking I think you will find that will be over the gross permitted weight for the vehicle...plus point is it would be far worse with a lardy lump like me driving.

Looks like I'm in trouble with the Mrs's again...
She asked me what I'd most like to do to her body...
Apparently "Identify it" is not the correct answer!

Theoretically, probably not.
I've only got the handbook for the 2.2 and 2.8 LWB jobs, but the 2.2 has a max vehicle weight of 2510kg, the 2.8 is 2600kg. Kerb weights (so, the car with all fluids, full tank of fuel, and no passengers or cargo) are 1803kg and 1920kg respectively, giving you a payload for passengers (which also means driver) and cargo of about 700kg. I'd imagine the 2.5 will be roughly the same.

Towing wise, depending on how much the bikes and trailer weigh, I'd probably go with Greg's idea of chucking the whole lot on the trailer, assuming it falls within the max train weight for the car (this will be on the VIN plate under the bonnet) and you have the license to pull it.

The info you need will all be stamped on the vehicle plate in the engine bay Julian.
It'll tell you the Gross laiden weight, Unlaiden vehicle weight and Gross train weight.
Basically take the unlaiden weight from the gross weight and that will give the spare capacity weight available for your vehicle.
Will there be fork lift facilities both ends for loading and unloading a 700kg lump in and out?
If you do go overweight and are unlucky enroute with an enforced detour to a weigh bridge, try and get out of the car at the crucial weighing - apparently the driver weight and fuel are part of the total gross laiden weight - constant problem I have at work trying to get my retired traffic policeman van driver to do deliveries.

Thanks for all the replies, advice and comments  . Sorry not to have got back sooner but its been a bit hectic with my brother on a tight schedule.
My brothers wife forgot to arrange the International carrier.... :? my brother was not pleased , so in the end the safe( in a crate )is still in my workshop.
We went yesterday, I had the bikes on the trailer and all the other extra engines and fairings in the fronty completely filling it even with the back seats out and we took them to a lock up in Hampton.
I have a small forklift at my workshop which lifts about a ton so I can load it ok. I expect my brother will arrange something
It may be easier to get a van to take it.
Thanks for all the details on vin plates which I didn't know about.
Still tempted to try loading it in the back just to see :) .
