Hi.

I have not had any problems with my 1999 2.2 so far apart from the remote control for the central locking & alarm but Im sure someone will come along and give you advice.

Most important is has it had the injector pump changed yet? If so when...

and rust...check the chassis carefully, behind the rear bumper, rear coil mounts etc...

play in the steering or clunking can mean the bevel box is on its way out.

Car is throw away really if the pump goes...if you are paying someone to change it for you, you wont get change out of a grand...which on a car that isnt much more money it makes more sense to then break it and recoup some of the costs that way.

Are they a known flaw on that model? That could be nasty what if they have no idea if it was done or not?

Yes it's a known downside to the model, you should never run the pump dry as it relies on the lubricant ability of the diesel, the pump is high pressure electric controlled. The X22 and Y22 pumps differ the later has electrics mounted on the top. Any disturbance to fuel system changing filter, pipes etc will require the fuel system to be bled. Some people have managed to get away with clamping hoses when changing the filter though. Either way the DTI isn't fitted with a lift pump so cranking it over when it's dry will kill it.

Basically you have to look after it

To run it dry means to run out of diesel...something you shouldn't do to any diesel really. The pump on that 2001 DTI could have either the x22dth or the y22dth engine. Easy way to check is if the fuel pump has 1 big plug on the top its a x22dth and costs about 300 to 500 to be rebuild not including labour, if it has 2 big plugs on the top it has the y22dth engine and the pump costs about £1300 (no that's not a typo) not including labour. And at 90k miles I'd say that pump has at very best 40k left in it and at worst it might go tomorrow. And they go without warning. When I got mine the pump had already died so I got it cheap (750 3years ago) spent 500 getting the pump rebuilt and did a good 40k miles in it before selling it with just over 170k miles on the clock. The DTI is a really nice truck, really smooth and has loads of grunt. The only down side to them is the pump. So haggle it down so that you can afford to get the pump rebuilt as and when...or buy a truck were the pumps already gone and fix it. (But only as long as its a x22dth (pre 2001)) and you do it yourself or get a quote from a trusted repairer.

The fuel pump is here....its not my pic but its the best I could find on Google lol. See that red plastic cap...well that's the bleed valve for the pump so follow that down under all the rubber pipe work and you'll see the top of it (refer to the second pic). As said if it has 1 plug as per the second picture then its the cheaper pump...if it has another plug opposite the normal plug then its the expensive pump.

And your looking for the top of this

i think if i were you if the one youre going to look at hasnt got proof of a recent fuel pump change id wait untill one that has comes up especially as from what ive read that sort of mileage (90k) is when theyre prone to go !
if you do go to test drive it i would also make sure the 4x4 system is working correctly - you should get a solid green light when the 4x4 button is pushed - if it flashes continually theres a problem - also be aware that 4x4 should be only be used on loose surfaces - so if you check it on a hard surface - only activate/ deactivate it while driving in a straight line and at low speed ! it can be activated up to 50 mph but for testing purposes the former will suffice ;)
