Wotcher folks,
My apologies if everyone else knows this one, and I'm just slow to catch on, but I just found this one today.
It would seem that if a local council has it's own MOT centre, for testing their fleet of vans, buses, ambulances, or whatever, by law they are also required to deal with bookings from the general public. Now, since they won't do any of the repair work (If needed) and are likely to get more frequent VOSA inspections than a little garage, you're more likely to get a fair but stringent check done on the car. Admittedly, you're going to be paying full whack for the test, but for peace of mind that you're not going to get tucked for things that don't need doing, I reckon I can cope with that.
Happily there's one a couple of miles up the road from me, so I think they'll be getting Sophie for her test next week.
