Oh, no, not another insurance thread

Currently, my cars (Frontera & Volvo) are insured through Frank Pickles.

I have bought another Frontera and need to insure it so I can collect it this comming weekend.

I have contacted Frank Pickles, but they will not insure it as the vehicle is not seriously modified (neither is the Volvo, but I've had the policy for some time - they are not taking on new, standard vehicle policies).

So, I would like to suckle on your collective knowledge teat for a reccomendation of an insurance compnay to

1. Insure a standard Frontera (almost factory mint)
2. Permit minor modifications over the first year of the policy.

Best quote so far is with Swift Cover, but they specifically mention the following:

"By accepting this insurance you confirm that none of the following applies to the vehicle you are insuring: ...If it is modified to improve performance or change handling. "

Whilst I dont intend on improvong performance, a suspension tweak, different wheels & tyres would be classed as a change to the handling I guess.

I also intend moving the Volvo to the new insurance company (a quote from Swift Cover on the Volvo is conciderably cheaper then Frank Pickles) so would require a company that will insure two cars on the one policy.

Money Supermarket came back with about 124 quotes for the Frontera and 94 for the Volvo - rather than me ploughing through the lot, I'd appreciate a nod in the direction of Insurance Campanies that will fulfill my needs mentioned above.

Just to reiterate from my "decision, decisions" thread - the "little blue bug" is tired. I have bought a newer Frontera (with no dents or rot) to transfer the good bits over to. I'm guessing this process could take a year, so the newer Frontera, although standard at the moment, will gradually get it's mojo back (and so will I )

How soon are you aiming to Be using the new Fronty?
Just wondering because rather than rushing into a new policy what about a short term policy for ye weekend?
I did that for Sophie when I went to pick her up, so if there's no hurry what about it? Was about £15 or so from DayInsure.

Gives you time then to search for the best deal, and perhaps transfer some mods that FP will cover.
Other than that, I don't know of any insurers who'll do a Volvo and a modded 4x4 on the same policy

Thanks Jim - I hadn't thought of short term insurance (I did insure the Clio for a week at a time when I was doin the engine on the BBB)

I've found a broker that will accept upto 6 modification - I'll know more after they phone back tomorrow evening.

I've also found Sureteam (I recall them from 4x4 magazines).

I'll have a look at Daysure.

It was interesting to note on the compare the market car quote form, the number of modifications you can add - ranging from wider wheels, roll cage, wheelchair access (nothing about snorkles though).

Have you tried sainsburys mate? you get a discount if youve got a nector card with points too! they insure mine for a little over £200 f/c.

Daysure will do me a week for £62 (good enough while I sort out a proper cover for the two cars)

I've not tried Sainsbyrys specifically - do they permit modifications ?

I told em i had big tyres n raised suspension n they were fine about it, oh and i search the compare websites and then phone the best 3 direct, you always get a better deal if your cheeky!!

Beware with Sureterm. Their mods are limited - e.g. maximum lift height is 3" or 75mm. That means lift on the overall height of the vehicle. So a 2" body and 2" suspension is a no no with them. Add bigger tyres and your seriously stuffed.

I think Jims advice is best. Short term policy to get it home, then take your time to build it and insure when your ready to use it.

One trick from the old book, if you don't actually own the car, then are you insured to drive other peoples cars 3rd party on your current policy.
You could try speaking to the current owner and ask if they'd claim ownership of the car for a little while longer (the time it takes to drive it home ). That way you can claim you are test driving it and your own policy should cover you if your have 3rd party on other cars on it. Double check with FP about this though, as the law may have changed since I last knew you could use this loop hole.

Thanks Ste - went through the form filling process, but it came out more expencive than other quotes I've recently got - perhaps a phonecall will return better results.

The phone call is the best option, you can negotiate and get the other car on limited milage policy

Right, new car is now insured for 7 days (from 10am tomorrow), thanks to Jims reccomendation of Daysure

This gives me time to sort out a better insurance company for my needs.

Keep the suggestions comming, as I've not yet found a preferred supplier.
