Auto - off roading??

Postby R6_wal on Thu Aug 02, 2012 3:10 pm

I have been offered a cheap 2.2D, B series with a autobox, what they like for off roading, mainly green lanes? I know the manual is quite capable, but unsure of the auto!

Autos are ok....you dont get the same engine braking as a manual, so some cunning cadence braking on steep declines might be needed...

...but on the plus side you havent got a clutch to burn out on steep inclines, and hill starts are easypeasy with 2 feet and 2 pedals too...

Just check the auto is working as it should, cos they can be pricey to fix and not many 2.2's had em so 2nd bits might be hard to find.

Looks like I'm in trouble with the Mrs's again...
She asked me what I'd most like to do to her body...
Apparently "Identify it" is not the correct answer!

I find my auto fine off road (3.1 trooper). Nothing extreme, woodland tracks, wet, muddy fields etc. What I have noticed is how I use 4wd less with the auto. The gentle way the box brings the power to the wheels helps here. Mine has the torque on demand system with the dash display that shows how much power is going to the front wheels, on tracks that I used to apply 4wd as a matter of course I can now see that the 4wd system very rarely cuts in.

i smash the granny out of my 3.2 auto on and off road and no problems if you need engine breaking on steeps slopes you put it into 1st on the box as this is a semi fixed gear so ou get some engine breaking.

you simply pick a hill and hold the pedal down and let the engine and gearbox do he worrying and if it starts spinning then just lift off and pt your foot down slower and trust it will work. just take it easy at first and be gently with the pedal.

if your going off road regular you can get a oil cooler for the auto fluid that goes in front of the rad but i never bother with it on mine an no worries yet i just change the atf once a year as it gets a bit thin lol
cheers
